The Ghost and Mrs Muir
The Ghost and Mrs Muir | Frieda Grafe
3 posts | 2 read | 3 to read
The Ghost and Mrs Muir tells the story of a young widow (Gene Tierney) who rents an old house by the sea that is haunted by the ghost of a sea captain (Rex Harrison). Despite all the trappings of a gothic tale, the film is in fact an ironic comedy, in which the ghost and the widow play out their relationship as a battle of wits. The film was not a huge success when first released in America in 1947, though it achieved an afterlife as a TV series in the 1960s. But in Europe the film soon acquired a reputation as an exemplary product of the Hollywood system. Joseph Mankiewicz, its director, was a firm advocate of the idea of the auteur, by which he meant that the director must also be the author of the script. For Mankiewicz, cinema was above all dialogue. But as Frieda Grafe shows in her attentive and evocative account, there are many voices speaking in The Ghost and Mrs Muir. She traces the influence of Darryl Zanuck, the forceful head of 20th Century-Fox, the screenwriter Philip Dunne, R.A. Dick, the author of the novel on which the film was based, Bernard Herrmann, who composed its wonderful music, and the particular slant given to the film by the casting of Tierney and Harrison.

This is my first time participating in #TBRTarot. The prompt for July is to read a book with the word “and” in the title. I enjoyed watching the TV show as a little girl. I enjoyed seeing the movie as a young woman. I did not enjoy this audiobook as much as I had expected. Lucy spent most of her life doing what others wanted, her husband, her mother-in-law, her sister-in-law. The death of her husband was an opportunity for her to be free (cont)⬇️

CatLass007 to live her own life. People always thought that they knew what was best for her and put a great deal of effort into bending her to their will. She started standing up to the living. But the Captain was incredibly domineering. She‘d start out objecting to something he told her to do and end up doing it anyway. At least he was upfront about his behavior, never pretending it was what was best for her, even if it was at times. 1y
CBee Thanks for joining the #tbrtarot train 😊 1y
CatLass007 @CBee Thanks for letting me hop on the train in the middle of the year. 1y
CBee @CatLass007 of course! It‘s very casual and flexible 😊 1y
