In the French Quarter of New Orleans the Mardi Gras revellers concealed a group of pleasure-seekers who preferred to wear black. For Zillah, Molochai and Twig the party had been going on for centuries, fuelled by sexual frenzy, green Chartreuse and a cocktail of vodka and innocent blood.

I love this book, and I've loved it since I read it in college (about 25 yrs ago). Fortunately, it has lost none of its magic in my latest reread.
Nothing runs away from home in a vain search to find his favorite band in Missing Mile, NC, but also finds a new family in three wild vampires 🖤

TrishB I loved this too! It‘s probably that long since I read it but it‘s stayed with me. 6mo

This book takes me back to my Goth youth when I dressed in black, wore ankh necklaces, and smoked clove cigarettes like there was no tomorrow. This book, initially published in the early 1990s, has a strong Goth feel. Homicidal vampires, a bisexual artist heroine in mortal danger, and a gay male love story add up to an entertaining read. This book is much tamer and less explicit than “Exquisite Corpse,” but still has some sex and violence.

A more complex story than Exquisite Corpse, loved the first part, but too many elements felt forced into the ending. The only character I could genuinely like by the end of it was Ghost, and I think that was the point?

I picked this up because I was looking for more horror written by female authors. For a book written by a woman, the women in this book were treated very badly. There were only a couple of female characters and they were just throw away characters, fulfilling the sexual needs of the males.
So the book was ok. I see how this could appeal to readers that are into the punk or goth scene. I am not the intended audience.

TrishB The author is now Billy Martin. At the time I was the intended audience and loved this book as being a bit of a breakthrough in the usual vampire novels. 6y
hissingpotatoes That's disappointing, I was looking forward to this author's books. Have you read the Sonja Blue series by Nancy Collins? I just finished the first one and even though there's violence IMO it seems to have better female character rep. 6y
ravenlee I bought a PZB book once in high school, on a boyfriend‘s recommendation. I read the first five pages or so, flipped through some later bits to see if it improved, and chucked it. It really bothered me, and I never even glanced at another one again. (The bf only lasted slightly longer than the book, too). 6y

Tagged by @Booksnchill for #cult5. I'm not sure if "Cult" has meaning in the age of the internet but these are 5 that had an impact on my life and a small but fanatical following at the time. They may or may not qualify!! Honestly, I could pick a hundred but these were close at hand.

I admit I went through a goth phase in my teens and early 20s. I still like the gothic ascetic. My favorite book back then was Lost Souls. I think I've read nearly everything Poppy Z. Brite wrote. I also loved Drawing Blood. #gothgalore #halloweenreads @Tiffy_Reads @JoeStalksBeck #screamathon @4thhouseontheleft

Thinking back on some of my favorite books, and Poppy Z. Brite came to mind. I've got to find Lost Souls and re-read it. I wonder if it will mean as much to me now...? What favorite books from your youth do you want to read again?

57 ~ Lost Souls by Poppy Z. Brite (Paperback📖) ~ Started: 27.05.17 ~ Finished: 05.06.17
Rating: 3/5📚

I honestly do not know how to feel about 'Lost Souls', part of me thinks that I may have enjoyed reading it when I was a teenager & part of me thinks that I would have reacted to the book in the same way then as I do now, it's very conflicting!

The story does have some interesting aspects.
