James Cain‘s stories are always fun to read - mini book-bound film noirs, usually about a man who knows better, but falls anyway for that sexy married woman with murderous intentions. It hardly ever turns out well for the man. “Mildred Pierce” had to be my favorite though - more novella than short story, it veered in a different direction than most of Cain‘s plots. About to watch the 1945 film version next, starring a mesmerizing Joan Crawford.

We still need two lovely Littens to round out our biography/autobiography/memoir group (Group S) for this round of #LMPBC! If you‘ve never done this before, it‘s very easy and an incredibly welcoming community. I‘ve only done two rounds and it has become a wonderful way to tackle the TBR or explore titles I wouldn‘t otherwise. Check out the details over at @suvata !!!

Fourth book finished for #24in48. Its my third James Cain book. He‘s a noir master, and this did not disappoint. I wouldn‘t say it‘s my favorite of his books—I found it confusing at times—but the ending was very well done. I love Cain‘s books because the action starts from the first page and doesn‘t stop. This one seemed straight forward and then something would happen to have me on the edge of my seat, again and again and again.

The rules of the book exchange are to send it sometime in May, so obviously I left it to the last day. But it should get to its owner in no time! Hopefully my book buddy likes all my picks! My first book exchange has been fun so far, but I'm way too excited to open up my package in 21 days!!! 📦❤️📚 @BookishMarginalia #summersantagoespostal #summersolsticebookexchange

Love, when you get fear in it, it's not love any more. It's hate.

I want to call it hard boiled noir at its best, but I think cops or detectives have to show up for it to be hard boiled.
The inspiration for Camus The Stranger-- what more do you need.
