Breadfruit: A Novel | Célestine Vaite
8 posts | 3 read | 8 to read
Not since Precious Ramotswe made her first appearance in The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency has a novel's heroine so immediately and completely won readers' hearts. Materena Mahi, "the best listener in Tahiti," is warm and generous, a natural problem solver, versed in the folk wisdom of her native island home. When a drunken Pito proposes to Materena, she initially thinks it's just the booze talking. But Materena can't help starting to plan for a fabulous wedding. Right away she's off making inquiries on behalf of "a friend of her boss." From Cousin Moeata, Materena learns that the cake is the most important part of the wedding. From Mama Teta, she's given to understand it's the ride to the church that really counts. Cousin Georgette insists that the real key to a wedding is the dancing. As Materena juggles all this helpful advice, she forges on with everyday life--her relatives, her new baby boy, church on Sunday, cleaning her boss's house...it never ends! Soon, though, Pito seems to have forgotten his proposal. Should Materena be fiu of this heartbreaker? Célestine Vaite's latest tale of big dreams on a small island will leave readers cheering.

Stealing reading time anywhere I can...like a gap between grocery shopping and daycare pickup. #momsoflitsy #whereiread

Tamra How is this one so far? I think the blurb likened it to #1 Ladies series? 7y
mrsmarch @Tamra I did read that somewhere, and I can see the resemblance. I love AMS. The informality and the stream of thought narrative. But there are differences too. Mma Ramotswe has mysteries to solve in addition to life; Materena just has life but that‘s more than enough for her. I‘m liking her very much. 7y

Reading the tagged book. HBD TO ME! A PALM SUNDAY MIRACLE HAS OCCURRED! My absolutely whacko puppy brought her bedtime pigs ear treat to the couch so we can sit together. This is COMPLETELY NEW BUT AWESOME BEHAVIOR. Tomorrow is “the†surgery day so she might not love me as much tomorrow night. I‘m taking this as a hopeful sign that she‘s maturing in to the really good family dog I think she can be. #dogsoflitsy #hbdtome #litsybirthdays

Pickpick

Loved this! So funny. Oddly enough it reminded me of Anne of Green Gables. Set in rural Tahiti, a town where 1/2 the population are your cousins & everyone knows everyone's business. Very domestic- & women-focused. The structure is episodic but the main narrative push is whether Materena will marry her partner with whom she has 3 kids. The only thing I didn't understand was that her man was a useless bozo although he did love her. #LitsyAtoZ #B

"He's a good man, my son," Mama Roti says.
"Ah oui."
"He works."
"Ah oui, that's good," Materena says.
"He drinks a bit every now and then," Mama Roti goes on. "But at least he's not violent when he drinks. He just talks a lot of nonsense."
Materena nods.
"I've raised him very well."
Materena nods again and looks away.

Pretty low bar set for straight dudes, eh?

Relaxing at the end of the day with a bath, a good book, and a caeser (made with gin instead of the traditional vodka which worked out pretty well). So far this book is great, very irreverent and funny and not quite what I was expecting when I read it was a romantic comedy of manners. I like books that defy your expectations. I think it's a solid #Recommendsday pick, in fact.

emilyhaldi That's my kinda bath!! ðŸ¹ðŸ› 8y

I can't decide which book to read next for the #Readathon!! Inventive YA fantasy sequel or Tahitian romantic comedy of manners?

RanaElizabeth I'll always vote for dragons, especially as I love that series. 8y
CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian @RanaElizabeth That's what I decided! I thought I'd better read the sequel before too much time passes after I finished reading the first one. 8y
