Without a Net: The Female Experience of Growing Up Working Class | Michelle Tea
2 posts | 2 read | 10 to read
While many recent books have thoughtfully examined the plight of the working poor in America, none of the authors of these books is able to claim a working-class background, and there are associated methodological and ethical concerns raised when most of the explicatory writing on how poverty affects women and girls is done by educated, upper-class journalists. It was these concerns that prompted indie icon Michelle Tea--whose memoir, The Chelsea Whistle, details her own working-class roots in gritty Chelsea, Massachusetts--to collect these fierce, honest, tender essays written by writers who can't go home to the suburbs when their assignment is over. These wide-ranging essays cover everything from stealing and selling blood to make ends meet; to "jumping" class; how if time equals money, then being poor means waiting; surviving and returning to the ghetto; and how feminine identity is shaped by poverty. Contributors include Dorothy Allison, Diane Di Prima, Terri Griffith, Daisy Hernandez, Frances Varian, Eileen Myles, Shawna Kenney, Siobhan Brooks, Terry Ryan, and more.

I accidentally bought some books today. Oops. I was in Cannon Beach, which has a great indie bookstore, Cannon Beach Book Company, and the top 5 on the stack managed to come home with me from there. Plus, my #botm arrived. A great day for a #bookhaul!

LeslieO Good work! 6y
Liatrek Cannon Beach is me and my bestie favorite vacation spots and we love that bookstore 😊 6y

shanaqui I'm glad it's not just me who accidentally buys books. Do you accidentally read them too? :D I'm always accidentally starting books from just trying to peek at a page or two... 6y
Hooked_on_books @Liatrek Isn‘t it great? It‘s really well curated and they get so many good books in a small space. I actually only live 20 minutes away, in Gearhart, but for some reason don‘t get down to that store much. 6y
Hooked_on_books @shanaqui Yes, I totally do that! I‘ll have a book in mind to read next before I finish one and will suddenly find myself halfway through a different book instead. 🤷🏼‍♀️ 6y

Pickpick

This is one of the best nonfiction books you could ever decide to pick up. It is so encouraging to see my own experiences from a childhood of poverty reflected in the words of these essayists. If you‘re like me, you can see yourself reflected in these words. If you‘re not like me, please read this. This book could improve relations between classes so easily if everyone was forced to read this book. I‘m honestly emotional after reading this one.

Soubhiville That‘s a great review! I‘ll look for it. Thank you! 7y
