After a While You Just Get Used to It
After a While You Just Get Used to It: A Tale of Family Clutter | Gwendolyn Knapp
5 posts | 2 read | 1 reading | 3 to read
A vibrant new voice ups the self-deprecating memoir ante with tragicomic tales of her dysfunctional life in swampland Florida and Americas Big Easy A dive bar palm reader who calls herself the Disco Queen Taiwan; a slumlord with a penis-of-the-day LISTSERV; and Betty, the middle-aged Tales of the Cocktail volunteer who soils her pants on a party bus and is dealt with in the worst possible way. These are just a few of the unforgettable characters who populate Gwendolyn Knapps hilarious and heartbreakingyet ultimately upliftingmemoir debut, After a While You Just Get Used to It. Growing up in a dying breed of eccentric Florida crackers, Knapp thought she had it roughwhat with her pack rat mother, Margie; her aunt Susie, who has fewer teeth than prison stays; and Margies bipolar boyfriend, John. But not long after Knapp moves to New Orleans, Margie packs up her House of Hoarders and follows along. As if Knapp werent struggling enough to keep herself afloat, working odd jobs and trying to find love while suffering from irritable bowel syndrome, the thirty-year-old realizes that shes never going to escape her familys unendingly dysfunctional drama. Knapp honed her writing chops and distinctive Southern Gothichumor style writing short pieces and participating in the renowned reading series Literary Death Match. Now, like bestselling authors Jenny Lawson, Laurie Notaro, and Julie Klausner before her, Knapp bares her sad and twisted life for readers everywhere to enjoy.

Part one of my book haul from my library‘s book sale. I was intrigued by the cover of the showcased book.

Mehso-so

I took the title literally and thought this was about “stuff clutter”, not family dysfunction clutter. The author exposes a lot of ugliness, but does it with tasteful humor. It was a quick read, but I was starting to tire of the endless drama at the end. One of the later chapters addressed her own romantic relationships and her learning moments. That chapter alone should be given to young women to read...best part of the book! A 3/5 ⭐️so-so.

Wife @lapreader Hi. I noticed that you stacked this. I don‘t usually keep my books unless I plan to read them again. I would be happy to send it to you if you‘d like. 🌹 6y
LapReader Same with me. I am in Australia but if you are still keen then yes please! 6y

LapReader Yay! Thankyou. 6y
ReadingRover I got a signed copy of this at BookExpo. I‘m actually pretty excited about it. It sounded good to me! I‘m sorry you didn‘t like it 😢 6y
Wife @readingrover I didn‘t dislike it, it just wasn‘t a solid “recommend”. The writing was very witty and filled my downtime at work Friday. 🌹 6y
KateFulfordAuthor If you need another recommendation, may I point you to my People‘s Book Prize nominated debut? Sassy female narrative, laugh out dialogue and a pacy plot. Check the link in the bio for 2 free chapters, reviews and more. 6y
Wife @LapReader Hi. I‘m not sure how long it will take, but I sent this book on it‘s way today. Enjoy !🌹 6y
LapReader I will let you know when it arrives @Wife Thanks again. What a lovely thing for you to do for me xo 6y
Wife I‘m a little concerned that the package I sent is lost. It was mailed 6/15/18. Would it normally take this long? I don‘t have prior experience with mailing to Australia. Hope it gets there and hope you are having a great day!🌹 6y

After renewing two books from the library twice I realized I wouldn‘t get to them before 2018, so I returned them yesterday. Of course, I couldn‘t leave empty handed. I may squeeze this short read in before the ball drops on NYE. Anyone heard of it? #libraryhaul

Eyelit Sounds like an interesting read! 7y
