Making an effort to diversify my bookshelves a bit more. As a teen who loved Anne Rice‘s Vampire Chronicles, how did I not hear about The Gilda Stories???!
Not featured is “white is for witching” which is apparently backordered into oblivion.

Mehso-so

Mixed feelings. There's no question this book was ahead of its time, and (phones aside) the bits set in the future felt prescient. But the writing style was very sparse and I had a hard time understanding the emotional content and the motivations of the characters. It's entirely possible that's a me problem. #queerBooks

“Hampton Falls, New Hampshire: 2020

“Gilda dropped the receiver into its cradle. The crash was impersonal, final. She turned the power of the video monitor back and pressed replay in order to see the tape she had made of the national magazine show.“

I'm not normally one for themed or seasonal reads, but I just so happened to start a vampire novel at the beginning of October, so I guess I'm on trend for once. #queerBooks

Pickpick

A slavery escape, vampires and Afrofuturism - oh my! And a winner of two LAMBDA awards in 1991. The novel follows Gilda from 1850 slavery escape and conversion to vampire, California in 1890s, Missouri 1920s, Boston 1950s, New York in 1970-80s, New Hampshire 2020 and ending in 2050. What does 2050 look like, well this 1991 novel might end up not being far off.

I can't believe it took me so long to read this book! A Black, lesbian vampire story that is about so much more. It's about connection, chosen family, race, the environment. It reaches back in time and forward into the future. It's a truly visionary read (that was written in 1991). Such a powerful tale of building the family you need! #queerbooks

Literaturenut Pretentious college sophomore me had a really hard time with the writing style a decade or so ago, but your review makes me want to give it another chance. I remember thinking at the time that I should like it. 6y
Bibliogeekery @Literaturenut it's so interesting to think about the things pretentious younger me had a hard time with 😂! 6y

Alexis Pauline Gumbs in her afterword of the 25th anniversary of the Gilda Stories. '. . .a special kind of self help book. . .enter a conversation with the species and he planet from the perspective of a black woman who loves women and black people unapologetically.' 🔥🔥🔥

A very prescient book written in 1991 that speaks to societal and ecological collapse 😬

I'm racing the clock with this one. I've got one more day before the loan expires. Why do I do this to myself?

Hestapleton If you put your device in airplane mode or turn off WiFi, you can hold on to the hold until you‘re done with it! It can be removed from your device without WiFi connection! 6y

I just learned about this book today. Has anyone read it yet? I was pleased to also find a nice bio on her and extra pleased to find she shares in my Cape Verdean heritage. Her family history and life was very interesting.

batsy No, but I want to! 7y
