It edges past a so-so mostly because I find Grann‘s writing to be consistently compelling, but I definitely prefer a long-form deep dive over this collection of independent (and previously published) articles that just happen to have the common thread of humanity‘s darkness.
Late Independent Bookstore Day post: Of course I found my way to some bookstores yesterday. The Wolfe book was on the freebie shelf, and I haven‘t even read the first in Lyla Sage‘s series, but because I really love the covers, I went ahead and bought the second one. And the socks, well, that‘s just how I live my life. There‘s reading books and there‘s buying books, and I‘m really good at both. 😆🤷🏼♀️

The Devil and Sherlock Holmes has multiple stories and ALL TRUE except Sherlock Holmes. There's true crime, passion, and even a sea story about a man's passion on finding the largest squid. The story about Chris who perfected the perfect crime and wrote about it is superb! There's also a true story of the greatest baseball stealer ever and one you'll never forget!
pickHigh praise. I am thinking of buying a subscription to the New Yorker to see more of this type of writing. Excellent read!!

so-soThis is a series of long form essays previously published in The New Yorker, New Republic, et al. The first set was the most true to the title, tales of murder and trial, the the second third is the “obsession” section including the “Old man and the gun” story and the last are the devils- the Aryan Brotherhood, Haitian death squads, the mafia in Cleveland. Some hits and misses- I think the title is misleading. Ok but there are better from Grann.
My next commute read- #NonFictionNovember. I bought Sherlock at a craft fair 20 years ago and I guard him behind glass on my bookshelf; however, Iet him out for this pic because “The Game‘s Afoot!”

2. Tagged. Some of the stories are interesting but it's probably getting a so-so rating.

pickThis is my second David Grann book and he is quickly becoming a favorite non-fiction writer for me. The essays on the squid hunter, sandhogs/NY‘s water supply, and the possible wrongful execution in Texas were the most interesting to me. I didn‘t care for the one about the baseball player. Overall, I‘m sure there is something of interest for everyone. #LitsyAtoZ #NonFictionchallenge2018
pickThese are a random, but really good collection of nonfiction stories. The giant squid one was my favorite, followed by the mob story...which shows how random they are! #audiobook #nonfiction (also my dogs are cuter than the book cover....)

Sometimes, my favorite recommendations from the All the Books podcast come when they mention an older title offhand. I love the new releases, but both @Liberty and @rebeccaschinsky have amazing backlist! I couldn't buy this one fast enough, and now I finally have the chance to start it!
