I loved this book.

Jamie observes the natural world as part of it, rather than as something separate from daily life. She keeps an eye on peregrine falcons whilst folding socks, goes in search of darkness and instead sees oil rigs and surveyors, considers the wonders inside us, and notices what we value on a plastic-strewn beach & in the Edinburgh skyline. It's beautiful, thoughtful and full of Scottish islands.

SandyW Your description reminds me a little of Leopold's "Sand County Almanac" which was required reading in a college ecology class. It's a lovely book as well, but placed in the US 7y

rockpools @cajunsyd Have a wonderful time! I've only visited Glasgow once, but was quite surprised at how varied it is, and how much green space. We had lunch in the West End, which was fab. And Edinburgh's just great! So much to do/see there - pretty sure you'll enjoy it! 7y

After I finished Jamie's second collection of essays (Sightlines), I quickly sought out her first. I wasn't disappointed. I love Jamie's beautifully descriptive but accessible prose and her curiosity, which leads her to notice the smallest details around her, in the natural environment and in the behaviour of the people she meets.
