The Salt House: A Novel | Lisa Duffy
20 posts | 14 read | 13 to read
In the tradition of Jodi Picoult and Lisa Genova, this gorgeously written, heartbreaking, yet hopeful debut set during a Maine summer traces the lives of a young family in the aftermath of tragedy. In the coastal town of Alden, Maine, Hope and Jack Kelly have settled down to a life of wedded bliss. They have a beautiful family, a growing lobster business, and the Salt Housethe dilapidated oceanfront cottage theyre renovating into their dream home. But tragedy strikes when their young daughter doesnt wake up from her afternoon nap, taking her last breath without making a sound. A year later, each member of the Kelly family navigates the world on their own private island of grief. Hope spends hours staring at her daughters ashes, unable to let go. Jack works to the point of exhaustion in an attempt to avoid his crumbling marriage. Their daughters, Jess and Kat, struggle to come to terms with the loss of their younger sister while watching their parents fall apart. When Jacks old rival, Ryland Finn, threatens his fishing territory, he ignites emotions that propel the Kelly family toward circumstances that will either tear them apartor be the path to their familys future. Told in alternating voices, The Salt House is a layered, emotional portrait of marriage, family, friendship, and the complex intersections of love, grief, and hope.

Parts of this book I really liked, other parts not so much. At first I felt like nothing much was going on, then it was a little too much. All in all, it felt like there were some missed opportunities. I enjoyed the young, star crossed love story, but felt it wound up a little too neatly. The grieving made sense, but the fishing drama was boring and drawn out. So if my review seems all over the place, it‘s because the story itself was as well.

Keeping it beachy as summer winds down 😫.

I really really loved this book. I sometimes struggle with multiple POVs in books but in this story, there was at least one scene from each of the character's points of view that had me nearly in tears. The clarity in each character's perspective was amazing.

A perfect summer tbr. The Kelly family are dealing with the after-math of grief after losing their youngest child along with current life that proceeds to move forward in all of its ups + downs during that following year. Emotional and gritty but also vibrant with hope and love. A memorable read.

Loved this! The rotating dialogue between the family is what kept me entertained. Listening to how all of them dealt with the grief was interesting.

I thoroughly enjoyed this debut novel by Lisa Duffy. Narrated in the voices of the Kelly family as they try to survive after a heartbreaking tragedy.

This a story of grief, family, and love among other things. It draws you in from the beginning and you become invested in the Kelly family.

Hope's mom said this and it couldn't be more true.
"So much of life is just finding that balance. The balance of holding on and letting go."

A beautiful written book which looks at how a family come to terms with the death of a daughter/sister. Each person goes through their own process. This book considers how the tragedy affects the family as a whole and whether they can learn to unite as a family unit again and learn to find a love of life again.

It has been a long, long time since a book made me cry, but The Salt House had me in tears. The characters are so richly drawn that I couldn‘t help hurting with the Kelly family as they struggled in the wake of the unexpected death of the youngest daughter. I wanted to reach through the pages and hug all of them. Lovely and heart-wrenching! (Also, I learned a lot about lobster fishing.)
