Did I enjoy reading this book? Yes, yes I did. And while yes, this is a book about the struggles of trans sixth grader, I also still expected it to be a novel of feminism and in a way it was, but the author attacked gender norms set for girls while encouraging the ones set for men. The MC just seemed to struggled off male stereotypes and issues way too easily (I just mean when the MC‘s guy friend mentioned how dumb it was that he couldn‘t wear a⬇️

I choose this book because it talks about Liv the main character who feels that he was born a girl but is born as a guy.
But the bigger problem is that he's forced to wear this skirt as his uniform in his new school, and he's very uncomfortable wearing a skirt. But Liv is on a mission, and with the help of another friend he can change the principal's mind and maybe the whole school.

This was a delightful book, the story was solid, and it was so easy to fall in love with the characters. Felt like occasionally the middle-graders sounded like older teens, but other than that, this was so good.

I think the author is cis, which I was super apprehensive about, but she's handled the story and the characters really well.

I loved this middle grade book about 12 yr old Liv, who knows he's a boy. His fight to change an outdated school uniform policy is written with sensitivity and hope. I ended up reading this straight through; couldn't put it down. Loved the characters, the rep (#trans MC, family with two moms, and secondary character with a disability), the story, and especially the hopefulness! There is no objectification via inspiration or tragedy. I know a few middle school age genderqueer/trans kids, and everything about this book mirrors their thinking and their moxie, as well as the challenges they face. 5🌟 #middlegrade

Coming out next week: This middle school novel features a #transgender protagonist who is mortified by the strict uniform policy at his new school. Liv --not Olivia-- has known he is really a boy for several years and he is now determined to lobby for a more flexible and inclusive policy that doesn't require girls to wear skirts. Just finished this through #NetGalley and it was a solid middle grade book about a transgender boy navigating 6th grade. Not earth shattering but solid. I agree with another Litsy reviewer who noted that the writing was a bit too cheery to feel totally authentic. There was a secondary character with an interesting story (wish it had been featured more) and the MC Liv has 2 moms, which is another point of interest.

The message in this book is incredibly important. Unfortunately, the fact that it's written for middle grade students caused the writing to feel a little too cheery and the major plot points seemed to work out too conveniently.

Not as good as Gracefully Grayson, but a solid look not just at a trans boy finding his way but also growing up with two moms, starting middle school, and all the changes that entails

Battling my election-eve anxiety with this goodie I got on netgalley today. I'm very excited to read this; I love the way middle grade books have been handling glbt issues in the last few years, and I've heard good things about this one. All the other trans middle grade characters I've read have been mtf, but this main character is ftm.
