Field Work
Field Work: Poems | Seamus Heaney
17 posts | 2 read | 5 to read
Field Work is the record of four years during which Seamus Heaney left the violence of Belfast to settle in a country cottage with his family in Glanmore, County Wicklow. Heeding "an early warning system to get back inside my own head," Heaney wrote poems with a new strength and maturity, moving from the political concerns of his landmark volume North to a more personal, contemplative approach to the world and to his own writing. In Field Work he "brings a meditative music to bear upon fundamental themes of person and place, the mutuality of ourselves and the world" (Denis Donoghue, The New York Times Book Review).

This collection has a wonderful combination of straight forward poetry and more abstract poetry. This is a great bridge between more obvious poetry collections and more abstract collections. Reminded me of Whitman in places.

Had to do some fancy editing to get the whole poem in, but it was necessary. I quite like this look at autumn.

Texreader Ok what the heck does “asperged” mean? 5y
GingerAntics @Texreader 🤷🏼‍♀️ I‘m hoping it‘s mid-20th century Irish slang for something?! 5y
TrishB It‘s a term used in the Catholic Church for spraying holy water apparently. 5y
GingerAntics @TrishB really?! I grew up catholic and I‘ve never heard that term. Hm. You lean something new everyday. 5y

It‘s nature poetry-ish (no oceans, yet @TheBookHippie but Ireland‘s an island so I suppose we‘ll get there eventually) but it took an interesting turn during a description of spent shells from fired guns (“acrid, brassy, genital, ejected”).

This is my next adventure in poetry. I hope I enjoy it. Getting ready to move across the country via train has given me an intense case of wanderlust. I‘m ready to go on an adventure with Heaney.

I loved seeing that my library book - checked out in Southern California- had cards and stamps from 1991 in Belfast. This book may not have had many readers, but it is well-traveled. 😀

TrishB I love that too when you get ex-library books. 7y
Libby1 Wow! Hello from 20 miles from Belfast! 😃 7y
Leelee.reads @Libby1 The corner stamp says La Salle, which I looked up and looks to be a small secondary school in Belfast. And not only is it cool that the book traveled so far, how cool is it that you and I are talking about the book now from so far apart? 😀 7y
Libby1 That truly is wonderful. 7y
