In this lesson plan for The City of Ember, students explore problem-solving and teamwork. After reading a chapter, they discuss how Lina and Doon work together to save their community. 2 ⭐ This was a DNF. I started and stopped at least 4 or 5 times all throughout 2023. I‘m surprised I couldn‘t get into this considering how much I adore and love both the original book and the movie. I think part of it for me was the illustrations. And while they are fit for the topic because they‘re so brown and dreary, they seem disheartening, instead of hopeful and enlightening. This is a great introduction , but original novel does it better

A good speculative fiction book and graphic novel in one! I think that it flows very well and that it is engaging and keeps you on your feet!

The City of Ember is about a girl named Lina Mayfleet and her journey as she tries to connect to the outside world from her city that is plunged in darkness and chaos. The City of Ember was created by the “Builders” for the people to live in for 200years and after those years a box would open with instructions on how to escape. Lina finds this box and embarks on an adventure.

The City of Ember is a story about a post-apocalyptic, underground world where young Lina and Doon are adventuring, following clues to leave the city and make it safely to the outside world.

One of my favorite reads in high elementary!

When Lina was trying to figure out what the paper said I also was trying to match letters to words. One word had ork as a clue and I guessed the word correctly.

I read the very beging of the book. The lore of the city. Supposedly, there was a chief and assistant builder who are making a plan to keep the people in the city not allowed to leave for 220 years. I don't know the reason but I'm excited to find out.

Soon Harrow draws messenger---and asks lina to trade! Doon wants to be underground. That's where the generator is, and Doon has great ideas about how to fix it. For as long as anyone can remember the great lights of Ember have kept the endless darkness at bay, but now the lights are beginning to flicker.

Lina Mayfleet desperately wants to be a messenger. Instead, she draws the dreaded job of Pipeworks laborer, which means she'll be working in damp tunnels underground.

This was my best book in January in 2021. I loved the characters and the way they handled challenges. Very entertaining, but also easy to read since it was middle grade. I asked for the entire box set for my birthday.

This was my #bookspin for August. I enjoyed this one greatly. I read it in about 3 days. (Job and kids....) I had to sequester in my room to get the last chapter done!!! The premise of a remnant society reminds me of the remnant of the Jewish people who would return to Israel from Babylon. Lina and Doon are great characters. Lina's love for her sister is admirable. I hope to find the rest of the series!!! @TheAromaofBooks

A city made to protect the citizens form the outside. A city full of street lamps to keep away the darkness of all times of the day. Would you venture out in the regions of darkness ahead? Should you leave the light to be in darkness? Follow Doon and Lina to find a better life out in the dark regions.

The City of Ember is falling apart while Lina and Doon both select their new jobs. Through these jobs, they learn a little more about their city than they could have guessed.

An easy read after a hard week.

This novel was a great read👍🏻 We are introduced to two main character Lina Mayfleet and Doon Harrow who are given their jobs as a messenger and a job in the pipeworks. They live in the City of Ember but it is unlike any city. The cities lights are beginning to run out and the food supply is very low. The two of them must follow the map and escape the city to find freedom and the light. Will they do it ? I love books that make me wonder and

For many generations , a massive generator has sustained the needs of Ember. The city is located underground, and the generator was only supposed to last 200 years.Their food supplies runs out, and they don't have the things they used to such as pineapples, corn etc. A young boy works at the pipe works , and finds what he never thought he would.

The city of ember is a medium paced fantasy book about Lina Mayfleet and Doon Harrow as they try to figure out the secrets of the City of Ember. There are blackout occuring regularly in the city, time is running out for them to figure out as to why. If you like Scientific Fiction/Fantasy/Mystery books, you will enjoy this book.

What a fun quick read. Is it for children? Maybe. Do I care? Not really. 😂

I may have started something. I read a book to my P6 students and today they all asked me “What are you reading us next?” I have had this book for a while and I haven‘t read it myself so I pulled it out to read to them. 🤷🏾‍♀️ A school counselor‘s job is never done. 🙂

I would have loved this. except I found it to he way too similar to The Giver. It is nice to have a dystopian series to recommend to younger / less mature readers since there's no sex or violence.

I'm a Youth Services Librarian by day and avid reader by night. My colleague and I were invited to a local 5th grade this afternoon to carry on discussion and interview questions after all the students had read The City of Ember. I had never read the series, having a distaste of readings books everyone is reading in a moment. I'm sad I had missed out of this dystopian debut until now. Are books 2-4 good and worth my time?

The city of ember is a fantastic novel written by Jeanne DuPrau and is the first of the books of ember series! I loved reading the book because it is about a post-apocalyptical city in modern day and was one of the winners of the Sunshine State Young Reader award. This is a science fiction book so some students might really love it and some might hate the thought but I would definitely recommend doing a literature circle with this book so students

Next on deck is The City of Ember. A book I read back in high school and absolutely loved!!! It wasn't until recently that I found out that it's the first book of a series!!

I listened to this #dystopian novel, while my daughter read the print book for our #motherdaughterbuddyread.
This gave me The Giver-type vibes and I really enjoyed it. Addi and I are both eager to continue reading the series!

Went to B&N yesterday to get this book for my daughter for school.. so proud of myself I had self control while there I browsed but didn‘t get anything on the other hand my daughter who is 13 and is at an in between stage of liking to read but isn‘t like a booknerd just yet says mom I like walking around the bookstore we gotta do this more often. Have a started something good. 💜

I picked up this novel because a colleague and I will be teaching #thecityofember + problem-based learning with a teacher next month.... Great, great #dystopian read for upper elementary or middle school readers. It would be a nice companion to #thegiver!

City of Ember is a Science Fiction (SF) novel about an underground city run by a generator, that is now falling apart after generations of use. The novel has won numerous awards, one being an ALA Notable Book award. It is an entertaining read and great for IR, LC, and for the teacher to follow with GR.
