"Sensational."--Matt de la Pe?a, New York Times bestselling and Newbery Medal-winning author of The Last Stop on Market Street Save the restaurant. Save the town. Get the girl. Make Abuela proud. Can thirteen-year-old Arturo Zamora do it all or is he in for a BIG, EPIC FAIL? For Arturo, summetime in Miami means playing basketball until dark, sipping mango smoothies, and keeping cool under banyan trees. And maybe a few shifts as junior lunchtime dishwasher at Abuela's restaurant. Maybe. But this summer also includes Carmen, a cute girl who moves into Arturo's apartment complex and turns his stomach into a deep fryer. He almost doesn't notice the smarmy land developer who rolls into town and threatens to change it.Arturo refuses to let his family and community go down without a fight, and as he schemes with Carmen, Arturo discovers the power of poetry and protest through untold family stories and the work of Jos? Mart?. Funny and poignant, The Epic Fail of Arturo Zamora is the vibrant story of a family, a striking portrait of a town, and one boy's quest to save both, perfect for fans of Rita Williams-Garcia.

Arturo tries to sort himself out through the written word and prepare for his role in the Zamora clan. Along the way, he's distracted with first love, stories of his beloved grandparents who emigrated from Cuba 🇨🇺 to Miami, and a businessman who wants to destroy the family's restaurant La Cocina de Las Isla. Great YA fiction

When an smarmy developer shows up with a grand plan for a high rise building, Arturo‘s family finds themselves in a fight to save their family restaurant.

This charming story was a delight on audio, and a great read for middle schoolers.

This reminded me of my own family and abuelita and how our family customs and culture is also all about food and eating amazing plates of yumminess. And then it includes poetry and José Martí, one of my favorite poets, well now, this book just became one of my faves! Go read this book. Then go read some of José Martí‘s work. Then go cook some of the recipes at the end of the book and invite me to eat it!!!!?

This is an excellent book about friends, family, and community. At its core is a boy who finds connections between his past and present. Also two thumbs up for all the Spanish.

Arturo‘s story of family, traditions, and friendship are a good foundation for the activist he becomes in order to save his family restaurant against a new developer.
