15 posts | 19 read | 15 to read
How have I been lucky enough to come here, to be alive, when so many others are not? I should have died. But I am here. 1945. Surviving the brutality of a Nazi prison camp, Marta Nederman is lucky to have escaped with her life. Recovering from the horror, she meets Paul, an American soldier who gives her hope of a happier future. But their plans to meet in London are dashed when Paul's plane crashes. Devastated and pregnant, Marta marries Simon, a caring British diplomat, and glimpses the joy that home and family can bring. But her happiness is threatened when she learns of a Communist spy in British intelligence, and that the one person who can expose the traitor is connected to her past.

Well Pam, you did again. Couldn't put it down at the end. Thought I wasn't going to like this one and then out of left field, bam! Got some resolution I needed from earlier books. But there are still some windows open. I hope she revisits some of the other characters.

Ok, so this is the second book in the series( see previous post). This book followed one of the characters from the previous story. Let me just say again, the premise was interesting, but she stretched my believing the scenes written could have actually occurred. Too much of a flight of imagination to think the story played out in the way it was written. But I have to say both books were readable, I gave 3 stars(2 1/2)

Liked it overall. I mean, I figured it out early, and the writing was okay, but it was quick-paced and I liked the historical time frame. This is book 2 in a series and I never read book 1 and it was fine. 3.5-4 stars / 5

Really enjoyed this follow-up to The Kommandant‘s Girl, and this helped explain some of the events from the first book as well as seeing some of those events from a different perspective. There may have been one or two elements that seemed a bit too coincidental but this didn‘t take away from an enjoyable read. Do make sure you read the Kommandant‘s Girl first and don‘t leave it as long between books as I did (didn‘t realise they followed on).

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Thanks for the review and advice!!! 7y
Andrew65 @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks When I started reading this I hadn‘t realised the two books followed on from each other otherwise I wouldn‘t have left it as long - especially as I owned a copy! 7y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @Andrew65 I have the first one! I‘ll have to find this one!! 7y

Male-possessive titles are one of the book trends of the last few years that I find the most obnoxious. 😕 #behindthescenesatbookmans

Laalaleighh Huh, I never would have noticed that but now that you point it out, I see it. 7y

I feel weird saying I like to read #BooksAboutWar but then again I think it's really important to read about things like the US Civil War, WWII, WWI - we need to pay attention to history and learn from it. #MarchMadness

tjwill Agreed. 8y
rustoryhuf I love historical fiction from those time periods. 8y
