The Innocent Mage
The Innocent Mage: Kingmaker, Kingbreaker | Karen Miller
'The Innocent Mage is come, and we stand at the beginning of the end of everything' Being a fisherman like his father isn't a bad life, but it's not the one that Asher wants. Despite his humble roots, Asher has grand dreams. And they call him to Dorana, home of princes, beggars . . . and the warrior mages who have protected the kingdom for generations. Little does Asher know, however, that his arrival in the city is being closely watched by members of the Circle, a secret organisation dedicated to preserving an ancient magic. Asher might have come to the city to make his fortune, but he will find his destiny . . . The Innocent Mage is book one in the Kingmaker, Kingbreaker series.

Enjoying this. It‘s not action packed but more about governance. Asher is the 7th and youngest son of a fisherman who doesn‘t get much cut of the family earnings so he‘s off to the capital of Lur for a year to make his fortune for himself and his dad. We get different POVs, not just Asher‘s. He‘s an Olken but the ruling human race is Doranen; they have magic & came to Lur centuries ago creating a magical Wall to hold back the terrors they fled

I feel like a higher rating for this one hinges entirely on how the 2nd book turns out, so for now it sits at the middle rating. Not bad, not great. It‘s definitely setting the groundwork for what could turn out to be a really good story. It‘s 95% world building and fleshing out characters and their relationships, so hopefully the next installment hits the ground running.
This was one of my #Roll100 picks in May.

This is a good book…reminds me of Star Trek next generation. It has great drama but not a lot of action. Still good but it has taken me a long time to get through this.

This really could have benefited from being cut down from its 600 page mark. Nothing exciting happens until the last 20% of the book. Everything else was just stretched out politics and mindless squabbles between the characters. Oh and of course some random unnecessary romance. The cliffhanger though was shocking.

Fairly standard fantasy - those covers drew me in though... 😬

So, turns out I've read this book before, and now own two copies of it. I remember it being an okay book. I ended up reading a different book.

The fantasy shelves in the #newhouse! #shelfie

TobeyTheScavengerMonk Is... is that an angelic choir I hear singing? Do you hear it every time you walk into this room? 8y
annkuch13 @TobeyTheScavengerMonk Definitely some angelic choirs. This room and the amount of shelves it could hold pretty much sold the house lol! 8y

Next up on my "Read all the Unread Books on my Shelves before Buying Any New Books (excepting preorders)" initiative! Kameron Hurley says that Karen Miller might be grittier than her, so I'm excited!! #planereads ✈️

TheLondonBookworm I keep telling myself to do that... But it never seems to work 😂😂 8y
The_Literary_Jedi I 💚💚💚 Karen Miller! I have the entire Kingmaker, Kingbreaker series and devoured them. She is gritty and isn't afraid to detail gruesome details. The Godmaker trilogy is brilliant as well. If you like Miller, try Fiona McIntosh or Sara Douglass 👍🏽 8y
thec0zy @TheLondonBookworm right?? I've tried like three times, but this time it seems to be working!! 8y
thec0zy @The_Literary_Jedi I'm almost halfway through Innocent Mage and am really enjoying it. I really want to check out the Godmaker series! Thanks for your recommendations. I really look forward to checking them out🤓 8y
