The Girl Who Escaped ISIS
The Girl Who Escaped ISIS: This Is My Story | Farida Khalaf, Andrea C. Hoffmann
5 posts | 1 read | 6 to read
Named a Best Book of the Year by New York Post Farida Khalafs story is harrowing but crucialespecially when it comes to understanding what ISIS actually is and does. Glamour As gripping as it is appallinga compelling testament to the suffering of ordinary people caught up in violence far beyond their controland to the particularly terrible price it exacts from women. The Guardian A young Yazidi woman was living a normal, sheltered life in northern Iraq during the summer of 2014 when her entire world was upended: her village was attacked by ISIS. All of the men in her town were killed and the women were taken into slavery. This is Farida Khalafs story. In unprecedented detail, Farida describes her world as it wasat nineteen, she was living at home with her brothers and parents, finishing her schooling and looking forward to becoming a math teacherand the hell it became. Held in a slave market in Syria and sold into the homes of several ISIS soldiers, she stubbornly attempts resistance at every turn. Farida is ultimately brought to an ISIS training camp in the middle of the desert, where she plots an against-all-odds escape for herself and five other girls. A riveting firsthand account of life in captivity and a courageous flight to freedom, this astonishing memoir is also Faridas way of bearing witness, and of ensuring that ISIS does not succeed in crushing her spirit. Her bravery, resilience, and hope in the face of unimaginable violence will fascinate and inspire.

If you can withstand reading the harrowing content of physical & sexual abuse then I encourage you to read this incredible heart pounding true story of resilience & survival. Your perspective of what it means to endure will shift drastically. The “shame” these girls faced was heartbreaking. In their culture your virginity is a sign of honor & even though they were held in captivity not everyone regarded their plight.

Crazeedi I can't even imagine the horror 😪 5y
Kalalalatja Sounds heart breaking 💔 5y

Cinfhen I can‘t believe this was happening in 2014/2015 and I‘m sure many are still in captivity today @Kalalalatja @Crazeedi it‘s absolutely heartbreaking 😢💔 5y

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Great picture, and I see you‘re back with the tough reads! I‘m glad this one was at least a pick of a tough read. 5y
Cinfhen It was both a tough read but a rewarding one @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I‘m finding these true life survival stories pretty inspiring right now. Definitely a HARD PASS for you @TrishB 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Cinfhen I understand that...and I‘ve been reading a lot of female issue centered ones myself...Catch and Kill for about a scandal for instance, She Said, Brave, Rage Becomes Her... I‘m currently reading Crash Override which is about Gamergate, something I knew little about going in. 5y
Cinfhen Thanks for the recommendation @Riveted_Reader_Melissa your tagged book sounds really interesting ♥️ 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Cinfhen You‘re welcome...not sure what I‘d count it for on the NF Card, but it is interesting and I‘m using it for my “new to me” Booked2020 list 5y
Cinfhen I‘m thinking your tagged book might work for the #Cybersecurity box @Riveted_Reader_Melissa ??? 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Cinfhen I might.... I had another one slotted for that, but you know how life goes, I may never get to it and use this one instead. 5y

This book is horrifying. So scary knowing this happened in 2014, only 6 years ago. The bravery of Farida Khalaf & the other stolen girls are awe inspiring. ⚠️ lots of Trigger Warnings ⚠️I don‘t know what‘s wrong with this world and all in the name of their God/religion.
