The Annotated Pride and Prejudice
The Annotated Pride and Prejudice: A Revised and Expanded Edition | Jane Austen, David M. Shapard
18 posts | 14 read | 2 reading | 1 to read
This Revised and Expanded Edition contains hundreds of new notes and illustrations. The first-ever fully annotated edition of one of the most beloved novels in the world is a sheer delight for Jane Austen fans. Here is the complete text of Pride and Prejudice with thousands of annotations on facing pages, including: Explanations of historical context Rules of etiquette, class differences, the position of women, legal and economic realities, leisure activities, and more. Citations from Austens life, letters, and other writings Parallels between the novel and Austens experience are revealed, along with writings that illuminate her beliefs and opinions. Definitions and clarifications Archaic words, words still in use whose meanings have changed, and obscure passages are explained. Literary comments and analyses Insightful notes highlight Austens artistry and point out the subtle ways she develops her characters and themes. Maps and illustrations of places and objects mentioned in the novel. An introduction, a bibliography, and a detailed chronology of events Of course, one can enjoy the novel without knowing the precise definition of a gentleman, or what it signifies that a character drives a coach rather than a hack chaise, or the rules governing social interaction at a ball, but readers of The Annotated Pride and Prejudice will find that these kinds of details add immeasurably to understanding and enjoying the intricate psychological interplay of Austens immortal characters.

I wasn't really enjoying the book much until this chapter. Mr. Collins is such a condescending bastard that I'm angry *for* Lizzy. I actually laughed out loud at her father's response here. 😂

JillR I think this is my very favourite part of the book, in fact my daughter and I watched the film adaptation at the weekend and she had to tell me to stop going on about how much I love this bit 😆 2y
LittlePixels @jillr 😄 That's awesome. My daughter and I are buddy-reading it and planning to watch the movie together afterwards. 2y

This challenge was a tad bit difficult for me... in regards to which aspect of the collection I wanted to highlight. I decided to go with the annotated versions, of the 120 there are two.

Lmstraubie I'm impressed you were able to narrow it down to two 😆 8y
CrowCAH @Lmstraubie lol, you're correct; me too! 😆 8y

I read Pride & Prejudice early this summer via serial reader. Since then, I have been searching for just the right print edition to add to my bookshelf. Exploring the bookstore with my friend while our daughters were at a Brownies thing, this copy caught my eye. I look forward to a reread someday and learning a bit about the time period along the way!

For Fun Photo Friday, I choose P&P. I usually reread one of Austen's novel every year or two. I love her humor and the radical agency she gave women to form their lives.

I throughly enjoyed this book. I loved the character development and the growing romance between Elizabeth and Darcy, as well as the rich descriptions and old fashioned language. I found the notes in this addition very helpful, though sometimes distracting and not pertinent to the story itself.

"There is a stubbornness about me that never can bear to be frightened at the will of others. My courage always rises with every attempt to intimidate me."

quote
cottagelantern

"There are few people whom I really love, and still fewer of whom I think well. The more I see of the world, the more am I dissatisfied with it; and every day confirms my belief of the inconsistency of all human characters..."

"An unhappy alternative is before you, Elizabeth. From this day you must be a stranger to one of your parents. - Your mother will never see you again if you do not marry Mr. Collins, and I will never see you again if you do." (Yay for Mr. Bennet!)

BookFairy Oh. A favorite quote. 8y

It is a truth universally acknowledged that Pride & Prejudice best accompanies spring weather.

Superb annotations for Jane Austen fans. It is a bit hard to read as just the novel itself,as the annotations are on facing pages from the text, so I would not recommend for first time readers.
