Indianapolis: A Circle City History | Jeffrey Tenuth
6 posts | 1 read
With its selection as Indiana's capital in 1821, Indianapolis was destined to become a major Midwestern hub. Through the decades that followed, the Circle City led Indiana into its golden age, when the state was one of the largest industrial and agricultural producers in the nation. Forced to reinvent itself after the decline of heavy industry, Indianapolis now supports a diverse technology- and service-based economy and proudly proclaims itself the amateur sports capital of the world.

This counts as reading because I read the menu, right??

Enjoying my time in Indianapolis after the wedding 😄

Aims42 Totally counts! 👍 I‘ll be visiting Indy for Memorial Day weekend (my hubs and his friend are going to the race, and his wife and I will be visiting the zoo with their 1ish year old daughter. I think I‘m more excited than their daughter LOL 😊) 4mo
quietjenn Haha, before I read your caption I was like, "Oh, there's a book about Skyline?" ? Followed rapidly by "I want some Skyline." 4mo
jdiehr @quietjenn I tried to find a book about Skyline for the tag in this post 😂 4mo
jdiehr @Aims42 We went to the speedway today to watch practice! So fun 😁 4mo

I have been in Indy all week for a conference and am loving my evenings when I get to explore downtown!!

GondorGirl Indy is such a fantastic city! 3y

Patchshank I went to their old location. They had some of his art work displayed and old Vonnegut Brand tools, some of his rejection letters and other various things. It was neat. Since I moved from Indy they've moved to a new location that is larger. I've been curious about it. It's a museum/library. So they have loads of books you can just sit down and read. 3y
Kshakal @Patchshank that sounds like heaven!! Maybe I will have time to check it out tomorrow evening! 3y
peaKnit Enjoy! 3y

Hubby and I are visiting the Indianapolis area for a 3-day weekend soon as a early anniversary getaway. We have been there before, but usually a very brief stop as we are passing through to somewhere else. Anyone have any thoughts on must-see things for us to do? We plan to visit the #Vonnegut museum (again), and would love to stop and support an indie book store or two. Photo is from an #audiowalk this week and to pretty to not share.

Melkyl I grew up in IN, and I suggest the James Whitcomb Riley house and Museum. He was a famous IN writer. The neighborhood around his house, Lockerbie Square, was really run-down in the 1970s. All of the houses were sold for $1 with the caveat that the houses would be renovated historically correct. It‘s a beautiful neighborhood. The IN State Museum is awesome, and so is visiting the Indianapolis 500 track and Museum. 6y
goodbyefrancie @Melwilk thanks for the suggestions! Sounds great! 6y

knittedgnome @jfalkens @kaye I found another too! The best part was the two homeless guys that told me all about Indy and each had books they were reading from it! 6y
