2 posts | 4 read | 3 to read
The summer of 1972, before I turned nine, danger began knocking on doors all over China. Nine-year-old Ling has a very happy life. Her parents are both dedicated surgeons at the best hospital in Wuhan, and her father teaches her English as they listen to Voice of America every evening on the radio. But when one of Mao's political officers moves into a room in their apartment, Ling begins to witness the gradual disintegration of her world. In an atmosphere of increasing mistrust and hatred, Ling fears for the safety of her neighbors, and soon, for herself and her family. For the next four years, Ling will suffer more horrors than many people face in a lifetime. Will she be able to grow and blossom under the oppressive rule of Chairman Mao? Or will fighting to survive destroy her spirit—and end her life? Revolution Is Not a Dinner Party is a 2008 Bank Street - Best Children's Book of the Year.

#GetMovin Day 26: Ying Chang Compestine‘s book title here is THE perfect #Anthem especially given today‘s world events: Revolution Is Not A Dinner Party! I‘ve had a chance to interview her in 2014. Here is a transcript of my interview which I transcribed for my website:
https://gatheringbooks.org/2014/07/31/meet-the-storyteller-an-evening-with-ying-...

Cinfhen Read the interview 😀seems like you two got along so well!!! I‘m totally inspired to read ALL her books now...and I‘m shocked that the other books mentioned are children‘s books!!!!! They seem VERY DARK 😱😱😱 7y
GatheringBooks @Cinfhen but yes, we eventually became friends - when we invited her back here in singapore for the asian festival of children‘s content the following year, she even insisted on coming to my place (which was an absolute mess bec we didn‘t expect a world class chef and award winning author to visit 😱) she also brought my husband a rare bottle of olive oil bec she saw my FB posts of husband‘s culinary prowess. :) (edited) 7y
Cinfhen That‘s awesome!! I‘ll be checking out her titles!!! Thanks for sharing 😊 7y

Thrifty finds today. I haven't actually read Beloved yet. 😱

Tamra Ok, I hate it when I acquire a book not knowing it's part of a series and it's not #1. 😠 OCD (edited) 8y
