"If it wasn't for the fused-with-Zyx thing, I suppose I would just be normal--whatever that means." When Felix Yz was three years old, a hyperintelligent fourth-dimensional being became fused inside him after one of his father's science experiments went terribly wrong. The creature is friendly, but Felix--now thirteen--won't be able to grow to adulthood while they're still melded together. So a risky Procedure is planned to separate them . . . but it may end up killing them both instead. This book is Felix's secret blog, a chronicle of the days leading up to the Procedure. Some days it's business as usual--time with his close-knit family, run-ins with a bully at school, anxiety about his crush. But life becomes more out of the ordinary with the arrival of an Estonian chess Grandmaster, the revelation of family secrets, and a train-hopping journey. When it all might be over in a few days, what matters most? Told in an unforgettable voice full of heart and humor, Felix Yz is a groundbreaking story about how we are all separate, but all connected too.

There's a lot to like about this book. Bunker's stream of consciousness narration style really characterizes Felix and Zyx, and the concept is interesting. Also loved the Z names. It was also nice seeing a SciFi book with disabilities rep, but it wound up coming off as really abelist because of character discussions and the implication that the behavioral and physical impacts of Zyx being in Felix's body were inherently abnormal. #LGBTQ #Scifi

Every week, I highlight #LGBTQAuthors as part of #TheRainbowShelf 🏳️‍🌈 Lisa Bunker has an impressive resume that includes author, non-commercial broadcasting (radio), program director for a community radio station, and House Representative for the Rockingham 18th District. She and Gerri Cannon were elected the same election cycle as New Hampshire's first transgender state legislators. #LGBTQ #OwnVoices #LGBTQVoices #Middlegrade

Picked this book up on a whim for a challenge calling for a book with a DNA helix on the cover and was rewarded within 20 pages with queer content! Felix is attracted to boys and his grandparent is genderqueer/genderfluid and uses the pronouns vo/ver/veirs. I have NEVER been so pleasantly surprised by a random library book selection before, especially a middle grade book.

On the one hand this was delightfully silly and weird (alien fused with a kid) but also heartwarming (beautiful family love). I also loved how many queer characters it included (gay boy, bi mom, gender fluid grandparent)! On the other hand I'm unsure about the messages the book gives: 1) Felix is 'cured' of the alien occupation that also serves as a representation of disability and 2) the gender fluid character reveals their assigned sex

kgriffith Hm, those are both rather disappointing from what sounds like an otherwise very affirming book. 6y

This book is even queerer than I was expecting! Gay 13-year-old boy, bisexual mom, and gender fluid grandparent! #QueerBooks

I just can't get behind this book. It felt tedious and the communication was rough. It seemed like an interesting idea but just poorly done.

This was an incredibly diverse, touching and wonderful teen book. A kid who's about to die (possibly) and his own way of finding out how he feels about it, and life, and living it, and what he loves about life. Also, a lot about being different. Feliz is 13 and has had an alien fused to him since he was little. In 30 days, there will be a procedure to attempt to separate the 2. There is a good chance that neither will survive, but they won't survive if they stay fused. Felix still has to deal with being a teen, being bullied, first crush, etc. Good story. For all Felix and his family have to deal with, they are lovable.
I received this book as a promotion in return for an honest review.

Starting this as my new YA read. Had dog company but Evie heard the neighborhood owl and ran out to protect the yard. 🐶🦉

Yay! #bookmail. I will get to this as soon as I finish the other 2 YA books I'm currently reading. Thanks, #goodreads giveaways.

Kaylamburson This one is an intriguing concept. Definitely worth the read! 8y
youngreadrshelf @Kaylamburson have you read it? 8y
Kaylamburson Yes, I have! @youngreadrshelf. It discusses gender in a way no other kids book does, and it's a fast-paced book. The writing style is a bit difficult to get into at first, but it's fun! 8y

Much easier to follow once I got used to the style. It's essentially the stream of consciousness of a 13-year-old and the alien fused inside him that occasionally takes over his body. It includes LGBT themes as Felix grapples with his attraction to his friend Hector, and understanding Grandy (Felix's gender fluid grandparent).

Not sure how I'm feeling about this one so far. It's an intriguing concept for a MG novel, but I'm wondering if young readers could really follow all of the garble in it. ...Or maybe I'm just too old and that's why I am struggling to follow the nonsensical interjections made by the alien 👽 fused into the main character.
