Dealing with Disappointment | Elizabeth Crary

This practical, easy-to-read guide introduces parents to the concept of emotional competency, beginning with teaching children to identify and acknowledge their feelings. It provides exercises and examples that demonstrate how even toddlers can cope with their emotions. An excellent companion to the Feeling Elf cards.

My last 4 books of 2023 were….underwhelming. I wanted something light, fun and maybe a little magic thrown in for good measure. What I got were books that were too long and filled with extraneous googah, too much sex with too little chemistry. Bottom line is there were HUGE swaths of books where I was just bored. I did finish all but Mr Malcom‘s List, so there‘s that. 🤷🏾‍♀️

I am disappointed with myself.

In 2020 I read 54 books. In 2021 I read only 42 and that counting the ones I bailed on, which I didn‘t last year.

This year brought different challenges than previous years. I dedicated myself to other hobbies, but I‘m still surprised by my numbers.

We don‘t succeed in every challenge but challenging ourselves is how we better ourselves, right?

Right?!!?

RamsFan1963 You're right. It's the joy of the challenge you should focus on, not always the end result. I missed my goal by 2 books, but I read more than I had before so I don't consider it a failure. I set the same goal for 2022 and I'll try again. Fail or succeed I can look forward to many rewarding books. 3y
EvieBee Right! My motto is enjoyment over number, any day. 3y
wanderinglynn I recommend instead of saying I *only* read 42 books, say, I *read* 42 books! 🎉 There‘s no failure if you read at all. Plus, you‘re clearly an interesting person who has a variety of hobbies. And considering the average books read for an American is 12 & 23% of people didn‘t read at all last year (according to Pew Research), you‘re well above average. So YAY you! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 And at the end of the day, all that matters is you enjoy reading. 💜 (edited) 3y

Itchyfeetreader Good advice @wanderinglynn Like you I had what felt like a bad reading year. I have been doing @Andrew65 #12booksin2021 and it‘s made me realise that even if my rewarding year wasn‘t anything I had hoped for, I did read some great books that will go onto be recommendations or favourites. I hope some of the books you read brought that joy. 3y
Andrew65 2021 was a difficult year, like you I read a lot less than the previous year. This will spur me in to reading more this year. 3y
Andrew65 @Itchyfeetreader it has been a really good way to read my reading year, and also identified which were my most productive and / or enjoyable months. 3y
AllDebooks I agree with all of the above. I lost my way at the start of the pandemic. I found I couldn't focus or enjoy reading, which was ironic as it's my go to relaxation and escapism. I found my way back by listening to non-fiction audiobooks. I also discovered I could docus on short stories and essay collections. This eased me back in and I'm over that blip. Don't see reading goals as a failure, they're something to aim for. 3y
AllDebooks The key is to fuel your passion for stories and knowledge and not get caught up in the stats. I hope you're all feeling better soon x 3y

✨I am so disappointed with my reading challenge so far. I was six books ahead, now I'm five books behind schedule. 😥 I really wanted to complete it this year, but with this funk idk if I'll be able to..
✨Anyone have any tips for getting out of funks? Months long ones? 💜😖

PacingTheCage Read an old favorite or two. 6y
TheBookAddict Read something short, but engaging. It will give you the satisfaction of having completed a book in such a little time. Or listen to an audiobook, something fun. I just listened to Juliet Takes A Break and it was great. Or go for a graphic novel. 6y
sprainedbrain I agree with @TheBookAddict ... try something short or some brain candy. That usually helps me! 6y

abbsinwonderland @TheBookAddict thank you! I have a few graphic novels (some are the boyfriend's, hopefully he'll let me touch them 😂) but I just can't get into audiobooks. Only one I liked was Pet Sematary cause the narrator was Michael C Hall 6y
abbsinwonderland @sprainedbrain thank you! Will try that 6y
sammisho I am kind of in a funk, and also really wanting to meet my goal. I am reading sappy romances. 6y
abbsinwonderland @sammisho oooh see, that's like the one genre I can't stand. 🙈 Most of them are too Hallmarky for me. 6y
Reggie Romance, it or horror gets me out every time. Something easy. Romance just because you know it‘s a happy ending every time. 6y
BarbaraJean Agatha Christie and children‘s/YA usually do it for me! Especially re-reads of favorite books from childhood. Anything that‘s a “comfort read.” 6y
GlassAsDiamonds Given the time of year, what about some of the “traditional” Christmas ones: The Night Before Christmas, the tagged, etc? They‘re all pretty short and you‘d be able to knock out four or five in a few days? 6y
Purrfectpages I‘m also behind. The struggle is real! 6y

I really wanted to participate in this weekend‘s #24in48 but I have to work on Sunday plus a meeting with my writing group in the evening. It‘d have to be 24in36...which may be doable? 😂😅😳

Well, I‘ve been to the post office and all hope is lost for me for #halloweengoespostal. I had a hunch. My post office has short hours, so I don‘t know when I‘m going to be able to get back there. If you are my match, would you please just let me know if I should be looking for something? I won‘t ask any questions, I just want to know what to expect. You can email me at hollybarker13@yahoo.com if you prefer. Thanks.
