Mutual Admiration Society
Mutual Admiration Society | Lesley Kagen
11 posts | 14 read | 11 to read
From the New York Times bestselling author of Whistling in the Dark comes an unforgettable novel that illuminates the sweet and brittle bonds of family, the tenderness of growing up, the heartbreak of longing for what we ve lost, and the poignancy of finding love.FACT: Unbeknownst to eleven-year-old Theresa Tessie Finley, she s in over her head.PROOF: After hearing a scream and catching a glimpse of a mysterious man carrying a body beneath the flickering streetlights in the cemetery behind her house, Tessie adds solving a murder case to her already quite full to-do list.Tessie has elected herself president of the crime-stopping Mutual Admiration Society as if dealing with her sad madness over the tragic drowning of her beloved father; showering tender loving care on her sweet but weird younger sister, Birdie; and staying on the good side of their hard-edged mother weren t enough. With partner in crime Charlie Cue Ball Garfield, Tessie and Birdie will need to dodge the gossips in their 1950s blue-collar neighborhood particularly their evil next-door neighbor, Gert Klement, who d like nothing better than to send the sisters to homes. And, of course, there s the problem of steering clear of the kidnapping murderer if they have any hope of solving the mystery of all mysteries: the mystery of life.A rich and charming tour de force, The Mutual Admiration Society showcases Lesley Kagen s marvelous storytelling talents. Laced with heartwarming humor and heartbreaking grief, this novel is nothing short of magical."

I finally read one of the #kindlefirst books I‘ve been downloading every month with my Prime subscription! I definitely chose it based on its cover, and it was only a so-so read, but it completes my #litsyreadingchallenge for 2017, so I‘m pleased 😀

1959, blue-collar Catholic neighborhood.
A blend of humor and grief, 11 and 10 yo Tessie and Birdie have just lost their dad in a tragic boating accident. Their friend Charlie lost his mom to suicide.

Pickpick

My January Amazon Prime pick was a solid choice! Narrated by a feisty eleven year old growing up in a Catholic neighborhood and causing mischief with her younger sister after the death of their father, Theresa "Tessie" Finley gives us snippets of information that she doesn't yet understand (her dad wasn't exactly faithful to their mom) and while she tries to be tough and brave, she's absolutely hilarious and full of heart.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

A hoot and a half for this fun romp! Last night I posted that I just wasn't sure what to make of this caper of a book. It's like a kiddy roller coaster. Ups and downs and peels of laughter. I really love these two sisters. There's sadness buried there, but it's not picked at. Just two young girls in the 50s out to solve a murder mystery. Ya know, like ya do. Their principal (also a nun) is missing! #litsyAtoZ

Anyone else read it? I'm sort of torn between "holy smokes this is a hoot and a half, this girl's got spunk and fire" and "holy smokes what the heck is going on in this book, this girl's a hot mess". But I'm still reading. What will these girls get into next. It's a short read if anyone still needs something for their readathon. ? I will say I've laughed out loud. I've also nearly spit my drink out with some of the words she uses.

dariazeoli I picked this as my free Kindle read this month but haven't read it yet. Glad it's not a pan! 8y
beagle.mama @dariazeoli Definitely not a pan! More of a did she just say that? Can I laugh at that? 👀👀 kind of read. 😂 8y

#BookNDinner! Healthy edition. Baked salmon filet, drizzled with soy sauce, with white sushi rice, asparagus, and Brussels sprouts. And classical music on the Jambox. 😋 This has been another production of #MrBookBookBabeKitchen. Happy reads & happy eats!

howlinglibraries Mmmm, asparagus! 8y
erzascarletbookgasm My favourite foods all in one plate - Brussels sprouts, asparagus and salmon! 😋😋😋 8y

#BookNDinner! Local pub edition. Remember that #Kindle Voyage I had received for my birthday? Probably not. 😝 Anyway, it didn't quite meet my needs (yes, #firstworldproblems), so I returned it for a store credit, and along with some Amazon gift cards from Christmas, I now have a Kindle Oasis! 🤗Does anyone else have one of these? It's a game changer. So excited to use this! Happy reads and happy eats! 😋

Hollie Ooooh, that looks snazzy! 8y
gossamerchild That shrimp looks amazing. 8y
JPrecht I hadn't seen the Oasis before... how cool! 8y

Gleefulreader Ooh - as a Kindle lover, can you give me the positives of this compared with the Voyage. Is it worth the upgrade? 8y
LauraBeth Nice! 😀 8y
Nuwanda I'd also be interested to hear about the Oasis. I have the Paperwhite and really like it, but I'm always intrigued by upgrades! 8y
Eugeniavb I have it. It rocks! So tiny 8y
saresmoore Awesome! I'm liking the Voyage so far, but I get frustrated by the page navigation. Might be a learning curve thing, since it's not quite as intuitive as the Kindle app. What made you choose to upgrade? 8y
cariashley I'd also love to hear why you prefer it over the voyage! I love my voyage but had a really old kindle before it 8y
Reviewsbylola I too would like to know what made you want to switch! 8y
BookBabe I sent back the Voyage because although it was quite a lovely Kindle—quite a lot to like about it really—there were some practical things that I really bothered me. My fingers would constantly press the Page Press "buttons" accidentally, so I was always losing my page. I tried turning it off, but I didn't like that either. 8y
BookBabe I found that it wasn't comfortable to hold the Voyage without a case using only one hand. My wrist and hand would become fatigued after a while. It was too narrow a thing to grip, with too little bezel, and too much weight. Especially lying down in bed, which is when I most want to use it. 8y
BookBabe The Oasis solves those problems for me. It has physical page turn buttons, which I do not press accidentally. More importantly, this thing is TINY and LIGHT. And the asymmetrical design puts the majority of its weight right in the palm of your hand, so you can hold it much longer without getting uncomfortable. 8y
BookBabe The battery case is awesome. It's so compact and adds so much more battery time. Super convenient. I love that I don't have to hold the weight of all that extra battery all the time. I just snap it on easily when I need it, and snap it off when I don't. I love the Oasis. If you have the same gripes with the Voyage, this is definitely worth the upgrade. ❤ 8y
MyNamesParadise I want those shrimp 😍😍 8y
minkyb Hmmm. I have a paperwhite. Instead of buying books on Amazon maybe I should investigate a newer kindle! Enjoy. 8y
saresmoore Awesome. Thank you! 8y
Gleefulreader Thank you @BookBabe for your comments! That had given me a lot to think about as I've been using my Kindle a lot more recently and those are some gripes I have. I have a bday coming up... hmmm :) 8y

I loved Whistling in the Dark, it took place in my home State, this one also takes place in Milwaukee and is free for Prime members. Free is my favorite.

christineandbooks You've read other books by this author? I looked at the Kindle First picks this morning but couldn't decide. This is one of my possible picks... Help! 8y
peaKnit @christineandbooks I have read this author, Whistling in the Dark and the follow up Good Graces, features two precocious sisters in the 50's. their life is hard, but they manage, "come home when the street lights come on" comes to mind. Simple reading, but enjoyable.:) to be fair, this was the only author I recognized which aided in my choice ☺️ (edited) 8y
christineandbooks @peaknit Thanks for the information! Honestly it was the cover that caught by eye first, but I do love a coming of age type story too... 8y
