In a Summer Season
In a Summer Season | Elizabeth Taylor
21 posts | 10 read | 17 to read
"You taste of rain," he said, kissing her. "People say I married her for her money," he thought contentedly, and for the moment was full of the self-respect that loving her had given him.' Kate Heron is a wealthy, charming widow who marries, much to the disapproval of friends and neighbours, a man ten years her junior: the attractive, feckless Dermot. Then comes the return of Kate's old friend Charles - intelligent, kind and now widowed, with his beautiful young daughter. Kate watches happily as their two families are drawn together, finding his presence reassuringly familiar, but slowly she becomes aware of subtle undercurrents that begin to disturb the calm surface of their friendship. Before long, even she cannot ignore the gathering storm . . .

Widowed Kate has married the younger, much less well off & apparently alcoholic Dermot, to general disapproval. Her young adult son is more interested in seducing girls than doing his job in his grandfather‘s business, her teenage daughter is infatuated with the local curate who is flirting with Rome, & live-in Aunt Ethel reports her slightly salacious interpretations of events in letters to a friend. A juicy slice middle class life in the 1960s.

Ruthiella Sounds good! To date I‘ve only read one Taylor novel and I need to rectify that. 2w
LeahBergen Fab edition! I haven‘t read this one yet. 2w

This reminds me of Barbara Pym novel but with sex. Nothing much happens. Just a view into people's everyday lives. Has one my pet peeves - overly long chapters. I hate to stop in the middle of a chapter. I found myself losing interest because it rambled on. If chapters had been shorter, could have read a few pages here and there and it would have been more enjoyable. ⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig My favorite quote "I could never have married a man who didn‘t simply dote on Jane Austen or Henry James,‘ she had said years ago. Alan had been the most satisfactory devotee and often talked of Donwell and Pemberley and Poynton—their aspect, the soil on which they stood, the position they commanded— as if he had just recently been staying at them." 3mo
willaful I ran across her books all the time when I was hunting down Virago Modern Classics and could never get into them. 3mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig @willaful such a beautiful cover, I wanted to love it. 3mo

A gentle summer read , more focused on human nature and behaviour of bygone days & English summer times of years gone . Nothing dramatic overly happens until the end and to me everything was innocent and maybe foolish but no adultery . Anyway first of Elizabeth Taylor‘s won‘t be my last but still at the moment prefer my beloved Elizabeth Jane Howard

😂😂

Vansa This is hilarious and acidic. And weirdly relevant now, with Instagram and Tiktok and the adolescent obsession to pander to the male gaze under the guise of “freedom of expression“ 1y

“It often happens at the change of life a sudden interest in sex! “ 😂the second half of this wonderful little book - the return of the Thorntons- is full of wonderfully witty human observations, making me chuckle 🤭 out loud. It‘s the first Elizabeth Taylor iv ever read and it won‘t be the last , Ethel and Gertrude 2 old ladies smoking after afternoon tea , their family gossip and demeanours remind me of my Gran & great aunts god bless ‘em .

#bookspinbingo pick #summerreading #augustreads in anticipation of a British summer actually happening it‘s time for a summer themed read , purchase in hatchards in Piccadilly years ago and there its sat on my shelf . So finally my first time of the highly rated Elizabeth Taylor and already I‘m loving the build up of tense within this family. Her writing reminds me alittle of my much loved Elizabeth Jane Howard

Cuilin Beautiful cover. I loved 1y

#Bookreport / #Weeklyforecast it‘s been a slow reading week.

After much bailing and indecision ( and frustration) I am now happily reading Elizabeth Taylor. 😅

Happy reading week all.

Lindy I recently brought a stack of books into my local used bookstore and the fellow who was going through them paused at Mrs Palfrey at the Claremont and asked “Is this the Elizabeth Taylor… ?” And I said no, because I could tell by the way he was asking he meant the actress. I haven‘t read anything else by Taylor. Did you finish In a Summer Season? 2y
Cathythoughts @Lindy Hi Lindy, I didn‘t finish it yet, must get back to it as it‘s very good. The one I read and can highly recommend is (edited) 2y

I‘m starting this one today. I know it says “summer “ on the cover, but all the flowers have me thinking spring. I hope this is a lighter read than the Dorothy Whipple I bailed on yesterday. 🤞🏼

I'm not sure why I didn't enjoy this as much as her others. It has all the hallmarks of her best, character-driven, little plot, pathos, beautifully realised internal voices. And yet I just didn't warm to it

Elizabeth Taylor's work is criminally underrated. She had such a wonderful tone and facility for captivated the lives of her characters. I wouldn't be surprised if people mistake get for her more famous namesake #underratedbook #31bookpics @howjessreads

LeahBergen I‘ve recently joined a Goodreads year-long reading of all 12 of her novels. I‘m about to start her third one and I‘m rapturously in love with her. 😍 6y
Moray_Reads @LeahBergen this is my seventh and I'd be hard-pressed to pick a favourite 6y

Elizabeth Taylor is my go-to palate cleanser for now. Her narratives are so light and subtle you feel that you‘re a ghost floating around the characters.

Kate Heron is a wealthy widow with two adult kids. She married a guy 10 years her junior - it‘s fun, but the age gap also presents problems. As usual, there‘s nothing much going on in Taylor‘s novels. It‘s a story where nothing happens! Except that this book has a decisive twist at the end 😑

#aprilbookshowers day 6: #publishedinthe1960s
I combed through my shelves pulling out books I was sure were 1960s publications. But a lot of them turned out to be 1970s or 1950s. I did manage to find these although it's only the first books in both the Earthsea and A Wrinkle in Time series that were published in the 60s. But the 60s sure were a great time to start some unforgettable series!

jfalkens I used A Wizard of Earthsea for mine too ☺ 8y

We are on the long drive home today so this is from yesterday. Perfect weather for a morning on the beach. Sunny but not too hot. The kids had fun playing with the sand and running in the water and I got to do a spot of reading right on the beach.

readinginthedark Wow, that looks so warm! 😆 8y
Serotonin Sadly my kid is still freaked out by sand 😆 8y
RealLifeReading @readinginthedark it was! Although just a couple of days ago we had four layers on as it was cold and so windy I worried my 3yo would fly away 8y
RealLifeReading @Serotonin my kids used to be that way too! Then we got some sand to fill their water play table (CA was in a drought) and they love it now 8y
tpixie @RealLifeReading such fun!! 8y
