How to Walk | Thich Nhat Hanh
11 posts | 8 read | 10 to read
How to Walk is the fourth title in Parallaxs popular Mindfulness Essentials Series of how-to titles by Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh, introducing beginners and reminding seasoned practitioners of the essentials of mindfulness practice. Slow, concentrated walking while focusing on in- and out-breaths allows for a unique opportunity to be in the present. There is no need to arrive somewhereeach step is the arrival to concentration, joy, insight, and the momentary enlightenment of aliveness. When your foot touches the Earth with awareness, you make yourself alive and the Earth real, and you forget for one minute the searching, rushing, and longing that rob our daily lives of awareness and cause us to "sleepwalk" through life. Thich Nhat Hanh shares amusing stories of the impact mindful walking has on both the walker and those who notice him, and shows how mindful walking can be a technique for diminishing depression, recapturing wonder, and expressing gratitude. Pocket-sized, with original two color illustrations by Jason DeAntonis, How to Walk k is a unique gift for all ages, sharing a simple practice that can have a profound effect on practitioners.

Transformative! As a regular walker, this book inspired me to think of it in a new way. While I will still walk often while listening to audiobooks, I will sprinkle in quiet, meditative walking too. This book did have a close encounter with my usually sweet Mollie and is a bit worse for the wear. Was she trying to tell me something about walking more often? #BokspinBingo @TheAromaofBooks

Ruthiella Definitely Molly is encouraging you to put down the books and walk her more often! 😂 3mo

Julsmarshall She could write that book, @Bookwomble 3mo
TheAromaofBooks When my dog was a puppy he chewed up a library book and I had to take it in and confess and pay for it, etc. Which wouldn't have been too bad except two years later puppy #2 did the same thing! 😂 3mo
Julsmarshall Oh no @TheAromaofBooks ! Puppies gonna puppy 🐶 3mo

My son and I walked around our neighborhood yesterday. It was a cloudy, windy, autumn day. After so much rain it felt good to get out, move, & breathe in fresh air.
Pic #1 is of my neighbors ghosts. They look spectacular all lit up at night. The tree is usually bright red, but it is less vibrant this year.A neighbor‘s autumn flowers, then me and my son, enjoying our walk.

LeahBergen How lovely! 🍁 13mo

This tiny book contains some simple & impactful advice, such as the suggestion to repeat the chant “Yes, yes, yes...thanks, thanks, thanks” alongside your footfalls. But it‘s also got this:

“Sometimes when I visit with friends or students from far away, they want to stay in touch. For the last 40 years, I haven‘t used a telephone...I don‘t have an email address...When people ask me for my address, I tell them, ‘It‘s the here & now.‘” 🙄🙄🙄

Susanita Well, that‘s one approach… 3y

I‘m a grumpy bastard today, so I paused midway through my walk and read a Buddhist text. It helped.

Crazeedi That was a good idea, we are all grumpy bastards sometimes 😍 4y

A mile into my walk, the bag I brought for the few bits of litter I expected to find is already full, and safely deposited into a farmer's bin. A mile and a half further on, and I'm surprised that the top of the sea cop (an old land reclamation earth bank) is so sodden, even with all the rain we've had. Taking a rest, & my main sense is of the Atlantic gusts rippling the wild grass and the farther fields of wheat. Just me, the cows, sheep & gulls.

Leftcoastzen Beautiful..I live in a neighborhood now , but used to pick trash up on my country or beach walks .It‘s a good thing to do. 5y

DivineDiana You have inspired me. ❤️ 5y
Bookwomble @DivineDiana Thank you 💗 Inspiration passed on from Julian Cope, who says in the tagged book that he carries a bag tucked in his hiking sock to use for litter picking. Passing it along 😊❤ 5y
Bookwomble @Leftcoastzen I couldn't believe how quickly I filled the bag! Mainly random plastics, but many beer cans and Costa and Starbucks cups, too 🤨 @saresmoore 😊 5y

Walking has always been part of my exercise routine. Always wanted to be a runner but my knees say NO! So I walk really fast (in good running shoes, not pretty one in the picture) w/music or audio book to inspire and get my heart rate up. Walking of this book is totally different. Walking mindfully with no destination in sight. Sounds way more difficult; yet I want to try it. 🐢 #slowdown

Just took a nice walk around the neighborhood. No headphones, no phone, just enjoying the crisp fresh air, the sun and the sights and sounds of ordinary everyday life which actually felt extraordinary when not rushing about and letting my mind wonder.
These books are truly changing my perspectives and I highly recommend them.

saresmoore Sounds wonderful! Thank you for sharing. 8y
Tsubame Alright, looks like I need to get all those books as well 😊 8y

"Mindfulness is the continuous practice of deeply touching every moment of daily life. To be mindful is to be truly present with your body and your mind, to bring harmony to your intentions and actions, and to be in harmony with those around you. We can practice mindfulness in every moment of the day as we walk from one place to another."

Tsubame 💓 Lots of love to you! 8y
