Things We Haven't Said
Things We Haven't Said: Stories of Abuse and Recovery | Erin Moulton
6 posts | 1 read | 6 to read
Statistically, teens make up the demographic most affected by rape, sexual assault, and sexual abuse, and yet the topic is shrouded by stigma and silence. "Things We Haven't Said"""seeks to make a change by providing teens with stories that engage, questions for further discussion, and resources that could save a life. Thesetwenty stories coming from a diverse but uniformly impressive group of women open the door to new conversations on one of the hardest topics we will ever have to address. But it s a conversation that we need to start having now."

Things We Haven‘t Said is a powerful and heartbreaking collection. I believe it is a must read for all. At the very least, I think it should be required reading for anyone working in the mental health field.

“I have spent three-quarters of my life in silence: sometimes imposed by myself, sometimes imposed by others, and almost always imposed by fear. I will not be silent anymore.” ~Shanyn Kay Sprague

“I don‘t wish I was told something (during revovery from sexual abuse) in particular, but I do with we lived in a society that was more willing and able to hear experiences of both love and pain. People love listening to the joy and triumph of recovery, but we also need people to listen to the ‘less‘ pretty things. I‘d like to see more people who hold space to listen to

abookishbutterfly the pain and fear involved in recovery. We often need others to hear our pain, our sadness, and our fear because we can‘t hold it all ourselves. And we shouldn‘t. Pain, fear, and sadness are not meant to be held but let go, and it‘s easier to do this if you know someone is listening with an open heart.” ~Aaluk Edwardson (from Things We Haven‘t Said) 4y

“Anyone who claims that healing is a journey is kidding themselves. There‘s no start or end point, no linear path, and sanctuary from the storms often manifests itself in places that look like a lion‘s den at first glance.” ~Jane Cochrane/Things We Haven‘t Said

“Here, they speak. Here, we listen. Perhaps the act of listening can be as empowering as the act of speaking. Perhaps the act of reading can be as empowering as the act of writing. I believe this to be true. Maybe reading these stories will give you a level of understanding that you didn‘t have before and motivate you to create change. Small changes, big changes —they all have impact.” Erin Moulton
