Reamde: A Novel | Neal Stephenson
Neal Stephenson, author of the #1 New York Times bestseller Anathem, returns to the terrain of his groundbreaking novels Snow Crash, The Diamond Age, and Cryptonomicon to deliver a high-intensity, high-stakes, action-packed adventure thriller in which a tech entrepreneur gets caught in the very real crossfire of his own online war game.In 1972, Richard Forthrast, the black sheep of an Iowa farming clan, fled to the mountains of British Columbia to avoid the draft. A skilled hunting guide, he eventually amassed a fortune by smuggling marijuana across the border between Canada and Idaho. As the years passed, Richard went straight and returned to the States after the U.S. government granted amnesty to draft dodgers. He parlayed his wealth into an empire and developed a remote resort in which he lives. He also created TRain, a multibillion-dollar, massively multiplayer online role-playing game with millions of fans around the world. But TRains success has also made it a target. Hackers have struck gold by unleashing REAMDE, a virus that encrypts all of a players electronic files and holds them for ransom. They have also unwittingly triggered a deadly war beyond the boundaries of the games virtual universeand Richard is at ground zero.Racing around the globe from the Pacific Northwest to China to the wilds of northern Idaho and points in between, Reamde is a swift-paced thriller that traverses worlds virtual and real. Filled with unexpected twists and turns in which unforgettable villains and unlikely heroes face off in a battle for survival, it is a brilliant refraction of the twenty-first century, from the global war on terror to social media, computer hackers to mobsters, entrepreneurs to religious fundamentalists. Above all, Reamde is an enthralling human storyan entertaining and epic page-turner from the extraordinary Neal Stephenson.

Decided I was in the mood for tackling this behemoth of a book tonight for my #MarchUnshelfing #challenge At 1,044pgs it definitely qualifies as a chunkster. And for a PB, let me tell you, it weighs a ton! A SF classic, it tells the story of Richard “Dodge” Forthrast, former pot smuggler turned RPG mogul. But success has made him a target and hackers infect it with REAMDE, a virus that holds players files for ransom. A tale for these buggy times!

This was a fun read - especially because it brought together some unlikely pairings (MMORPGs, badass special forces action, international cooperation?, family struggles, multiple characters coming into their own) - so ridiculous yet so believable.. The story arcs are incredibly fast-paced and action-packed that it feels as if these people are the only ones in existence!

@jillannjohn #justbookit starting this chunkster. Litsy really needs a way to mark books on your TBR as owned. If I acquire a book on my TBR I just mark it as read and don‘t rate it until I actually read it. #BFC

jillannjohn I‘d like to see that feature too! Your book looks interesting. 5y

Reamde is especially long, which I don‘t mind if the length is warranted. It seems like I‘d have more to say about a book I spent over 2 weeks on, but it‘s not incredibly complex. Some of the coincidences are a bit improbable, verging on the outlandish. Events take a long time to unfold in this mystery/thriller. If I was to recommend a Stephenson novel, I‘d go with one of his others. Still,it wasn‘t bad. Overall rating: 4.07 stars

I have conquered this beast! What I liked the most about the book was the way Stephenson managed to connect all the plot points into a mostly believable story arc. I did feel bogged down by the amount of details but I think that‘s a given with his books.

Great story, fast paced, feels like it would be a great movie. From the blurb I thought it would be quite techy/sci-fi but was more adventure thriller. Moving from Seattle to Canada to China, to the Philippines, with hackers, billionaires, gamers, terrorists, Russian mafia... Kept me interested the whole 38 odd hours.

One of the longest I've attempted in a while... 38.5 hours. I'm 45 minutes in. So far, I like.

Lacythebookworm My husband is listening to this one. He didn‘t realize how long it was before he started. 😂 I believe he is enjoying it though. 7y
LectricSheep I own this in paperback! I bought everything of Stephenson‘s I could find after I read Seveneves. 😅 How is it?! 7y
Oryx @LectricSheep it's early days, but very "readable" if I can day that about an audiobook. Listenable? ? I read Seveneves last year, really liked it. This is my second Stephenson. Which others would you recommend? 7y

LectricSheep @Oryx I thought The Rise and Fall of DODO was very fun— not like Seveneves at all, but good in a different way. Those are the only two of his I‘ve read so far, but I‘m hoping to change that! 7y
Oryx @LectricSheep I've had my eye on that one for a while, I'll probably cave soon and buy it. Been holding out for a good deal on it 7y

My second book by this author, and to be honest it started well. But ‘m only 63 pages in after starting it ten days ago. And it‘s 1,000+ pages long. At this rate, I‘ll finish in July. And my TBR stack is so high that I‘m putting this aside until I have a long plane trip.....looonnngggg plane trip.

Prototypical Neal Stephenson thrill ride - huge (1040pp), action-packed, technologically-savvy, maybe a little over-descriptive in spots, but on the whole really entertaining. Some of the action takes place in a World of Warcraft-like online game, which was especially fun for me as a former player - but the plot moves from virtual world to real world seamlessly and I would think even non-gamers might enjoy it.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa This one is on my to-read list, I really enjoyed his 7y

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Looks like one I should tackle on ebook, save my back and arms! Wow! 8y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Im practically spraining my wrist if I read lying down, but it's worth it. I keep thinking of Cheryl Strayed in Wild tearing up the chunks of books she's read and burning them to lessen the weight in her pack. I get it now! 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled I bet! That's my only downfall with hardcovers... it takes me twice as long to read them because I'm unwilling to carry them everywhere & usually only end up reading in small doses. 8y

I'm not going to lie...my success rate with reading #doorstoppers is not great. Don't get me wrong, I think Neal Stephenson is a great writer, just the video game based story line of Reamde wasn't for me. That said, I really enjoyed Snowcrash and wasn't the Metaverse just like a video game?? #Riotgrams

zombie_kitty1987 I liked snowcrash allot. I've had remade and seveness on my tbr for awhile. They are just so intimidating because his books are huge 😐 8y
Pruzy @zombie_kitty1987 It's like his goal to write a longer novel every time! I got through Anathem and felt very accomplished afterwards! (edited) 8y
ReadingEnvy I got through Quicksilver (haaaated it), Anathem (😍), and bought Seveneves but only read 100 pages. With Stephenson it's either love or hate. 8y

Decisions, decisions...

What should I listen to next?

ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Is Reamde about 300 hours long? 😂 8y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Oh - I see - 38 hours! Woah!! 8y
carys14 @ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled.com that's one of my deciding factors. Do I want something short enough that I will likely finish before the year's end? Or go with the shortest? Or the one that has been in my account the longest? Or do I just eeny meeny mo it? 8y
Ellsbeth The Fireman and Reamde are both excellent. Go with Hill if you want something a bit darker, and Stephenson if you don't. I need to read the Atwood. 8y

After turning a bunch of my gen x peers onto Ready Player One, I tried to take it up a notch and tell them that REAMDE was equally fun. Unfortunately the jump from Cline to Stephenson just wasn't the same level of easy to digest soft serve ice cream nostalgia that they were hoping for 😂
