This was at times amusing but overall just OK for me. It was a bit of a rom com / family drama, when retired George, who has likely always suffered from undiagnosed anxiety, really starts to lose his grip. Meanwhile, his daughter is marrying a man her family feels is beneath her, his wife is having an affair (though he doesn‘t know it yet) and his gay son is having trouble integrating his love life with his family life. #BooksinBloom 2nd book✔️

A lovely, heartwarming story of families, marriage, and the joys of the mundane. This book is a bit like 'The Vicar of Dibley' or 'Heartbeat' - gently comedic Sunday-night viewing with just the right amount of emotion to get British people feeling a bit fuzzy inside. Realistic characters and a neat ending, pretty enjoyable. I read it, but I won't remember it!

I keep picking up books about middle aged men having some sort of mental breakdown. I kept comparing this book to The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry. As for a Spot Of Bother, I enjoyed it but didn‘t like it as much as Haddon‘s The Curious Incident of the Dog at Midnight.

I set a goal to #readmyowndamnbooks this year and up next is this one. I am pretty sure it has been on my shelf for almost a decade.

It's probably not fair to judge this against Haddon's debut, the phenomenally successful "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time." But it's hard not to. And this effort comes up a bit short. It's the story of George, who at 61 is facing retirement, has a wife who's having an affair with a colleague, and a daughter who is planning marriage to a guy George doesn't like. Oh--and George is slowly losing his mind in the middle of it all.

Finally having finished this dramatic book! So much so that it reminded me of a BBC kinda movie 😂 Dad has anxiety attack. Mom has an affair. Brother is gay. Sister is getting married. All in all an entertaining book of a middle class British family.

I've in a big ready slumb these past few weeks. None of my books seem to interest me and it is struggle to even finish one. Does anyone have some tips to get out of this reading slumb?

This book is so amazing! In true Mark Haddon style I chuckle at the dry humor and feel for these charming characters. Loving every chapter!

This is the story of mild-mannered George who, recently retired, becomes convinced he has a tumour and proceeds to go slightly loopy. It's a hard one to categorise -there are some very funny bits and it's also quite sad in places. There is a well-drawn cast of characters and some good observational comedy but something was lacking for me somehow. I gave it 3 stars on Goodreads.
