Kama Sutra of Vatsyayana: The Classic Burton Translation
Kama Sutra of Vatsyayana: The Classic Burton Translation | Vatsyayana
10 posts | 9 read | 7 to read
Kama means desire, love, and lust; sutra means teachings and "verses." The Kama Sutra, then, is the book of love, teaching the best methods of cultivating sensual pleasure, sexual desire, and loving union. A classic of world literature for 1,700 years, this is the most explicit and fascinating book ever written for lovers. This immortal work also serves as a window into Indian culture and mysticism. Its unique approach combining meditations on politics and social customs with counsel on love and intimacy features frank, direct advice on bodily pleasures, from aphrodisiacs and kissing to orgasm-delaying techniques. This edition is the renowned translation by the great 19th-century explorer and writer Richard Burton. Its crisp style sets a new standard for Sanskrit translation, and its unblushing faithfulness to the original text sparked controversy in certain corners of the Victorian world. A wellspring of erotic knowledge, it remains an inspiration to readers of every era."

Thanks for the tag, @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm

1. All of the islands! I follow an obscene amount of travel accounts on Instagram and want to go everywhere: Santorini, Capri, Maldives, Mallorca, Ireland, Samoa, etc...
2. CRZ's Cemetery of Forgotten Books series would be sure to please upon reread; some sexy romances ; beach reads; and do I say the Kama Sutra to be a little cheeky!? 🤣

Deaccessioning. “Special collector‘s edition includes explicit photographs” of fairly modern-looking women and 1970s men with big 1970s mustaches. Was kitsch when I bought it, I promise. #cataloging

laurieluna I can only imagine the sorts of images in a 1970s version of this 😂🙈 6y
TimSpalding They also have NO relationship to the text. Zero. People who haven‘t read the Kama Sutra think it‘s something it isn‘t... 6y

Pickpick

The Kama Sutra summed up: it's basically just a guide to forming and maintaining romantic relationships. Only one part of it is about the sexual aspect of relationships, s2g.

Reading a 2000 year old relationship advice book as an asexual genderqueer person is definitely a weird experience. But 1) for what it is, and 2) its long-lasting legacy, I would give it a pick. Not many books written two millennia before our time are still relevant today.

My friend send me this wiki list about the timeline of South Asian and diasporic LGBT history, and the first point mentioned how gay sexual relations were discussed in the Kama Sutra. Wuttttttt??????

In an attempt to find the section to see how legit the claim was (it IS Wikipedia after all), I ended up reading the entire thing. The Kama Sutra. So. That's what happened with me today. Still a little embarrassed to add it on goodreads. 🙈
