Trouble with Lichen
Trouble with Lichen | John Wyndham
8 posts | 7 read | 6 to read
Francis Saxover and Diana Brackley, two scientists investigating a rare lichen, discover it has a remarkable property: it retards the aging process. Francis, realising the implications for the world of an ever-youthful, wealthy elite, wants to keep it secret, but Diana sees an opportunity to overturn the male status quo by using the lichen to inspire a feminist revolution. As each scientist wrestles with the implications and practicalities of exploiting the discovery, the world comes ever closer to learning the truth . . . Trouble With Lichen is a scintillating story of the power wielded by science in our lives and asks how much trust should we place in those we appoint to be its guardians?

Francis Saxover and Diana Brackley discover a compound in a rare lichen that can extend the human lifespan to two hundred years or more. They take different approaches to coping with the inevitable social disruption a limited supply is going to cause.

Not as well known as Wyndham's other books, but still an interesting exploration of ideas.

Two scientists discover a rare lichen which can retard the ageing process... This book written in 1960 by a man contains feminist ideas. It's an interesting read, definitely food for thought, inviting debates. Personally, I was a little bit disappointed by the end...

"What would you do with such a discovery in your hands?" Something has been discovered by accident and it can prolong someone's life. Two people make two different decisions regarding this and results in a bit of trouble due to lichen.

Interesting ideas. The book focuses on a lichen that has properties that prolong life. Someone is arguing that God only meant for man to live eighty years or so and to prolong life is against Gods law. This passage has a scientist questioning whether they'd consider other advances against Gods law.

I got my friend hooked on John Wyndham and she just read this book. She handed it off to me to read. It's hard to describe but the focus is on women and the role they have. This is science fiction and it has such an interesting way of describing things.
