Extra Lives
Extra Lives: Why Video Games Matter | Tom Bissell
8 posts | 4 read | 3 to read
Tom Bissell is a prizewinning writer who published three widely acclaimed books before the age of thirty-four. He is also an obsessive gamer who has spent untold hours in front of his various video game consoles, playing titles such as Far Cry 2, Left 4 Dead, BioShock, and Oblivion for, literally, days. If you are reading this flap copy, the same thing can probably be said of you, or of someone you know. Until recently, Bissell was somewhat reluctant to admit to his passion for games. In this, he is not alone. Millions of adults spend hours every week playing video games, and the industry itself now reliably outearns Hollywood. But the wider culture seems to regard video games as, at best, well designed if mindless entertainment. Extra Lives is an impassioned defense of this assailed and misunderstood art form. Bissell argues that we are in a golden age of gaming—but he also believes games could be even better. He offers a fascinating and often hilarious critique of the ways video games dazzle and, just as often, frustrate. Along the way, we get firsthand portraits of some of the best minds (Jonathan Blow, Clint Hocking, Cliff Bleszinski, Peter Molyneux) at work in video game design today, as well as a shattering and deeply moving final chapter that describes, in searing detail, Bissell’s descent into the world of Grand Theft Auto IV, a game whose themes mirror his own increasingly self-destructive compulsions. Blending memoir, criticism, and first-rate reportage, Extra Lives is like no other book on the subject ever published. Whether you love video games, loathe video games, or are merely curious about why they are becoming the dominant popular art form of our time, Extra Lives is required reading. From the Hardcover edition.

Bissell is annoying in that mediocre flavor of a particular kind of gamer but he gets an insight here and there— so many male writers who just need to get therapy

By contrast, Spiritfarer (pictured) is a lovely game and I highly recommend it, especially if you have been dealing with grief or losing loved ones to dementia

This is like a weird ode to video games. It's really well written and it's short. But you would need to be into video games to get this and I am and I did but I wouldn't necessarily recommend it to anyone.

#junetunz day 10

You can bet that when a book begins with the author playing Fallout 3 during Obama's 2008 victory speech, you're about to be transported back to some #goldenyears .

Wanted to get the glare just right to show off how cool this cover is; definitely one of my favorites.

#Riotgrams day 19 - great dedications

Bissell's book was one of my first exposures to video game journalism and remains one of my favorites.

I won't say I hated it but it wasn't what I wanted - it was less about how video games were made or sociological studies on their impact but more how the author related to games. And half the time he complained about the games' shortcomings. Didn't hit 12 hours like I wanted to, but I read more than I thought I would!

I was hoping for a psychological examination/explanation of why video games are important. I'm not a huge gamer, but I enjoy the occasional Wii session or two. But I'm six chapters into this book, and not getting much out of it. Any serious gamers have thoughts on this book? Or other recommendations on books about video games?

Pruzy I recommend Reality is Broken by Jane McGonigal. Essentially it is about how video games can make us better people. It's one of the reasons I have a never-ending game of Words With Friends with my brother! 8y
BooksAtNight @Pruzy Thank you for the rec! Will definitely check it out. It certainly sounds more like what I was hoping for with this book. 8y

It's the last day of #desertbusforhope , so get in on a good cause and a good time while you still can.
(In retrospect, this was a much better book to tag)
