Forever Words
Forever Words: The Unknown Poems | Johnny Cash
14 posts | 10 read | 23 to read
A collection of never-before-published poems by Johnny Cash, edited and introduced by Pulitzer-prize winning poet Paul Muldoon with a foreword by John Carter Cash. Illustrated with facsimile reproductions of Cash's own handwritten pages. Since his first recordings in 1955, Johnny Cash was an icon in the music world. In this collection of poems and song lyrics that have never been published before, we see the world through his eyes and view his reflection on his own interior reality, his frailties and his strengths alike. In his hallmark voice, he pens verses about love, pain, freedom, and mortality, and expresses insights on culture, his family, his fame, even Christmas. Forever Words confirms Johnny Cash as a brilliant and singular American literary figure. His music is a part of our collective history, and here the depth of his artistry and talent become even more evident. From the Hardcover edition.

I mostly liked this, but there weren't any poems that spoke to me like his music does and it was kind of short. I would have thought he'd written more poems. My #BookSpin book for April. @TheAromaofBooks

Velvetfur Ooohhh I have a Cash bio ready on my #MountTBRChallenge 6y
Velvetfur Oops! Pressed 'send' by mistake! So anyway, it's a different one to this, but I'm really looking forward to it as I totally love Mr Cash 😊 Please let me know what hubby thinks when he's read it! 6y
TrishB @Velvetfur hubby has another one on the pile that he says is really good! Yours is probably that one. @Sweettartlaura I think this is just poems and lyrics not a traditional memoir. 6y
TrishB @Cinfhen I‘m going to pretend that was on purpose! 6y
Velvetfur @TrishB The one I mentioned is called The Man Called Cash so yeah its probably that one 😊 6y
TrishB @Velvetfur that‘s it 👍🏻 6y
Velvetfur @TrishB I can't wait to get into it, him and Roy Orbison are my musical heroes 🎶💜 6y
Billypar I didn't know he wrote poems! That's really cool-it does speak to his versatility as an artist: I was always impressed by his late career releases that collected covers of artists like Depeche Mode and NIN. 6y
TrishB @Billypar his version of Hurt is 💔 wonderful stuff. He takes it to another place. 6y
Billypar Agreed! 6y

Boy that cake looks wonderful... Do you think he'll share?

Kaye He sorta has a look in his eyes like if you come near him, he‘ll knife you with the cake knife. I like cake a lot, but I‘ll let him have this one. 7y
Gina @Kaye yes he definitely was one of a kind 7y

I've always had a soft spot for the man in black and his music. These poems are a great addition to his work. ❤️

I think this book of poetry is unique. You can definitely tell that it's Johnny Cash if you know his music. I even caught myself trying to sing some of them. It didn't really work. Lol. The poems written range from the 1940's through the 2000's. Topics from spiritual to love, rock and roll and much more.

tpixie Lol. The Man In Black lead me to the bad guy in The Gunslinger, not Not to Cash. Hmm.... 8y

Note to Future Readers: save this for a day when it's sunny out and you're not recovering from a New Years Eve without a midnight kiss. While most are nice, and some even romantic, they're all bumming me out right now.

We don't explain or apologise
We pull the veil across our eyes
We see through your fake and rain
But we won't let you see our pain
We don't ask you to forgive
We demand that you let live
You can't understand, and so,
You don't really need to know
We are the walking wounded

Maike I didn't know this existed! 😱 this is just the thing I need 8y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @Maike, glad to assist ☺ it was a happy find for me at the library. The introduction at the start by his son is 👌 8y
