Dream London
Dream London | Tony Ballantyne
In Dream London the city changes a little every night and the people change a little every day. Captain Jim Wedderburn has looks, style and courage by the bucketful. Hes adored by women, respected by men and feared by his enemies. Hes the man to find out who has twisted London into this strange new world, and he knows it. But the towers are growing taller, the parks have hidden themselves away and the streets form themselves into strange new patterns. There are people sailing in from new lands down the river, new criminals emerging in the East End and a path spiralling down to another world. Everyone is changing, no one is who they seem to be, and Captain Jim Wedderburn is beginning to understand that hes not the man he thought he was...

About a quater way and though the descriptions and overall weirdness is great I honestly don't how how much further I can go.

#LondonCalling

This story was better as a short story, the novel fell short on so many levels. Nearly apocalyptic London that changes every night.

Cinfhen I‘m liking the book cover 😍 6y

Dream London has a fascinating premise: the city is changing in inexplicable ways with people changing every time they wake up. Unfortunately, the ultimate resolution feels a bit unsatisfying.

julesG I felt the same about this book. 6y

It went to the stack of 'read' books.

I actually read the first 1/3, skimmed through the rest.

Not sure what to say about it. It's weird, it reminded me of early Pratchett and Douglas Adams.

All in all it was a 'meh' read. (Not to mention I actually felt like I was cheated out of 10 Euros and a few hours of precious reading time.)

julesG @ju.ca.no - there are better urban fantasy books out there 6y
ju.ca.no @julesG sounds like it! It‘s always sad when a good idea is turned in a meh-book... 6y
DuckOfDoom I actually de-stacked the book now 😂 6y

LazyDays 😢💗💗 it sucks when your book let's you down. 6y
julesG @DuckOfDoom Probably for the best. 6y
julesG @LazyDays Just proves that I should read some reviews before making a purchase. 😉 6y

The blurb made me want to read it. I ignored the reviews and bought it. Now? Now I'm struggling with it. The idea is good, the execution though.

The MC speaks of himself as 'Captain James/Jim Wedderburn' more often than not. He's a pimp, but you're not supposed to call him that.
The story doesn't flow naturally, I've turned back to the previous page a lot to see whether I'd missed a page.
Then there's weird grammar - word order, tense choice. 👇

julesG Makes me want to take a red pen to the pages. I'm giving it until the end of the chapter. 6y
ju.ca.no Oh no🙈 that‘s unfortunate, the blurp sounds really interesting... (edited) 6y
julesG @ju.ca.no yeah, right. It sounds so promising. I am putting it on the shelf to give it another go later. 6y
ju.ca.no @julesG let me know in case it turns out worth reading a bit further in🙈🙈 6y

Resting after physiotherapy. I'm telling you, the physiotherapist is a sadist. "Are your muscles burning yet?"... "Good! Five more repeats!" I have aching muscles where there never were muscles before.

Now I have time to catch up on #TheGreatLibraryChapterADay and read a chapter or two of the tagged Urban Fantasy.

I have a massage coming up this afternoon. ?

Kaye I remember all the weeks of therapy after each knee was replaced. It hurts like heck. It was worth it in the end since my knees work better now. 6y
AmyG @Kaye omg you hd BOTH knees replaced? Wow. I tore my acl and meniscus ...skiing (why I don‘t ski anymore) and that was worse than childbirth. 6y
AmyG Feel better Jules! A massage...heaven. 6y

Kaye Yep, not at the same time. First was in 2009 , second was 2015. @AmyG 6y
CoffeeAndABook So is this sadistic physiotherapist the same Viking God you were swooning over earlier this week? Has he already lost his sparkle or does his ruthlessness make him even more desirable?? 😉 6y
ValerieAndBooks I love your question @CoffeeAndABook 😂 can‘t wait for your response @julesG (edited) 6y
julesG @CoffeeAndABook @ValerieAndBooks - nope, not the same guy. The Viking (not a god, he's no Thor) works in the gym part of the rehab facility, whereas the physiotherapist has a Russian accent and a drill sergeant attitude. Should you be interested, the massage therapist was a beefy guy with a eastern European accent I couldn't place, I was afraid of pain and bruises when I saw the size of his hands. But that guy knows how a skeleton works and where 6y
julesG ... to press and move parts. He made sure my pelvis is back in the right place and all of a sudden my right arm had a wider range. 😱 Two or three more minor adjustments and I was walking pain free. 6y
CoffeeAndABook @julesG Wow it sure sounds like you‘re surrounded by a whole team of capable men who are taking very good care of you. Eye candy or not 😄🍬 Have a good weekend 🌸 6y
julesG @CoffeeAndABook I'm determined to make the best out of the weekend. First stop later, local fair for my daughter's dance performance. Afterwards I am planning a trip to the coffee shop and then to the book shop. 6y
CoffeeAndABook @julesG That sounds like my kind of weekend, quite perfect 💎 Enjoy 😄 6y

#bookhaul from yesterday's #LitsyMeetUpHamburg

Since I mainly bought stuff for the kids and had only my giveaway price to show off for the communal #bookhaul picture, we decided to go to the chain store with the large English books section, so that I can get one book for myself. @DuckOfDoom even threatened to buy one book for me.

A word to the wise: Do not go book shopping with a bunch of Littens who have similar tastes in books.

👇👇👇

julesG I did not get the book I wanted. (The Mermaid and Mrs Hancock) But I got three other books from my TBR. I'm in favour of 10 day weeks, with a four day weekend and at least 36 hours to each day. Otherwise I'll never get through my TBR. 7y

julesG And the book I wanted to buy, but was sold out 😱 7y
julesG PS: The only reason I didn't buy more books, where logistics. I had to carry those books home on the train. (Fortunately, both kids carried their own books themselves.) 7y
LeahBergen I have By Gaslight waiting on my shelf, too. 👍🏻 7y
RadicalReader @julesG what an absolutely gorgeous book cover!! I completely understand the reasoning for not getting more books rain does have a way of putting a damper on things 7y
batsy What an great haul, though. Now I'll have to add By Gaslight to my pile 😆 7y
PickwickPlockPlock The covers are gorgeous. If the content is even half as good... ! 7y
julesG @LeahBergen I think it was your post which made me put By Gaslight on my TBR. 7y
julesG @batsy I totally bought this based on the cover and the blurb. 7y
julesG @PickwickPlockPlock That's what I'm hoping. 7y
julesG @RadicalReader It was the train, not the rain, but same thing - more or less. 😉 I have a bunch of books to add to my wishlist and TBR. I can always get them later. (book hoarder that I am) 7y
RadicalReader @julesG happiest comfort for bookworms is their TBR list yet also as terrifying as conquering Mount Everest 7y
Moony Wich bookstore is it? Perhaps I can visit it next time, when I'll travel to hamburg. 7y
julesG @Moony Thalia in der Europapassage. Die haben eine echt schöne englische Abteilung. 7y
Moony Oh ja die kenne ich bereits. Das stimmt, die Abteilung ist gut sortiert. 🙂 Werde beim naechsten Mal wieder vorbei schauen. 7y
