What an opening line! Ellen the narrator is a 10-11 year old in the segregated south who comes from a pretty terrible family but she's a practical, resourceful old soul with a tell it like it is way of speaking that feels exactly right for her voice.

The most beautiful and protagonist motivated prose I have read in a long time. And a stunning, poignant ending. Highly, highly recommend. Such a unique voice and such a moving story about a subject very close to my heart: the importance of good, giving foster homes for children like Ellen.

The voice of the narrator is enchanting and dynamic. The story so far goes back and forth between Ellen‘s life with her “new mom” and the events leading up to her life in what I am assuming is foster care.

Through the eyes of Ellen Foster, a precocious 11-year-old living a troubled life in the South, Gibbons weaves a heartbreaking tale of abuse, abandonment, perseverance, and hope. The brutally honest account of a young child's experiences with her alcoholic father, dismissive relatives, and a society that often values the wrong ideals, is both touching and infuriating. Ellen Foster is one of those books that puts life in perspective.

At first, this book seems like a simple story about a girl who cannot get a lucky break, but on closer inspection it becomes a powerful story about race and injustice. It is a quick read and a meaningful read. Definitely worth your time.
