The Santa Claus Man
The Santa Claus Man: The Rise and Fall of a Jazz Age Con Man and the Invention of Christmas in New York | Alex Palmer
18 posts | 10 read | 30 to read
The true story of John Duval Gluck, Jr., who in 1913 founded the Santa Claus Association, which had the sole authority to answer Santa's mail in New York City. He ran the organization for 15 years, gaining fame for making the myth of Santa a reality to poor children by arranging for donors to deliver the toys they requested, until a crusading charity commissioner exposed Gluck as a fraud. The story is wide in scope, interweaving a phony Boy Scout group, kidnapping, stolen artwork, and appearances by the era's biggest stars and New York City s most famous landmarks. The book is both a personal story and a far-reaching historical one, tracing the history of Christmas celebration in America and the invention of Santa Claus."

I really wanted to read/listen to a nonfiction book related to the holiday and happened to find this by chance. It‘s about John Gluck and his charitable efforts in NYC that helped popularize both the holiday but more the iconic figure of Santa by playing the role of Santa‘s helper in NYC in the early 20th century. He just happened to defraud a number of folks in process. Interesting, but not mind-blowing stuff.

Not bad. An interesting story of the man who ignited Christmas in NYC, with a subplot of Boy Scouts included. There is some true crime, but not as much as I would like (or had expected, since I read this for a true-crime book club).

Is it bad that I‘m picking this book up to read, while taking a break from taking down our Christmas tree? 🤣🤣 (the rest of the Christmas decorations can stay up for another week) I‘m so exited to read it, thanks again @Beatlefan129

CouronneDhiver Good for you being all timely. Mine will probably still be up in April. Lol 6y
Aims42 @CouronneDhiver Haha! I don‘t know why, but this year I‘m just ready to get it out of the house. The rest of the decorations will make it thru the New Year... and beyond LOL 6y

This is certainly a #fairytaleofnewyork. At least at first. Ok, maybe there‘s some fraud involved. But John Gluck still had a hand in making Christmas more merry for the needy children of NYC.

My husband and I slept in our new bed, in our new HOUSE, for the first time last night 🙌🏻 being that the bed is ridiculously comfortable, I accidentally slipped back in it this afternoon to read. Unfortunately, this book is not holding my attention. I am in a total reading slump at the moment, nothing sticks!!

Reviewsbylola Bummer. 🥵 6y
Crazeedi I've been there! Your mojo will return, you're probably just exhausted from your move. Just enjoy your new home, new bed. Maybe listen to a good podcast. That usually perks me, especially if they mention a book! 6y
keithmalek I bailed on this one as well. 6y

The first book I ever added to my litsy tbr ?? This is the true account of John Duval Gluck Jr. "The Santa Claus Man", who in 1913 formed a group of volunteers to act on childrens unanswered letters to Santa and deliver the requested gifts. Although his organization was later shut down due to fraud, many children received gifts in the years that the group was active ?

1. Definitely both! All the books, all the formats!!!
2. Again both, I read a lot of genres that tend towards series, but I love standalones too
3. Coffee and hot chocolate 4. Candles. 5. All the colors! I don‘t like pastels much, but otherwise I love color. 6. Fuzzy socks 7. Not really, the only thing I collect figurine-wise are day of the dead katrinas #giftideasthisorthat @Tiffy_Reads

A nonfiction account of a con man in New York in the early 1900's who decided to answer the unopened letters to Santa that piled up every year in the post office. He made believers out of many little children while always planning his next get rich scheme. #don'tstopbelieving #rockinmay

This was a fascinating look not only at the charity John Gluck started that answered Santa's mail in NYC a hundred years ago, but also included a lot of history of the city. Perfect book for this time of year. 🎅🏼🎄

When children write letters to Santa and mail them - what happens to them? John Gluck decided to do something for these hopeful children in the early 1900's while living in NYC. He ended up in many schemes along with this one, earning the title of con-man. He was even investigated as a German spy during WWI. I appreciated the background information on many Christmas traditions that the author included.

Reviewsbylola Wow, you read that so quickly! I hope you brought some other books with you! 8y

My book club chose this nonfiction book for December. It's an account of John Gluck, a New York con man who decided to answer the letters to Santa Claus that poured into the post office every December. He ended up with an army of volunteers to help deliver gifts to the children. While writing this book, Alex Palmer throws in details about the origins of many Christmas traditions. If you can find it, I think you will enjoy. 🎄

BarbaraTheBibliophage I knew a man (who passed away several years ago) who answered letters to Santa. He was a magical guy - not a con man thankfully! 🎅🏻 8y
Mdargusch So interesting @BarbaraTheBibliophage. Sounds like an interesting and kind person. 8y
BarbaraTheBibliophage He was positively lovely. He wrote two books about his experiences. Now I'm thinking I'll pull out some parts of them for the holidays here. 8y

So I said I wasn't going to do a December #TBR but I realized that I had a theme in mind so I am going to go for it. I declare December to be #BOTM catch-up month. 😂 once I receive my December box I will have 7 BOTM books unread so I plan on making a dent in that stack. And I am adding in a Christmas book for good measure. 🎅🏼

Before the NYC Santa Claus Association, childrens' letters to Santa Claus went unanswered. That someone saw this as an opportunity for a con (and a book) made it something I definitely #WanttoreadinDec . #seasonsreadings2016 #christmassyreads
