Escaping the busy confusion of his homeland and moving to an almost-uninhabited lakeshore where he plans on living simply and raising a family, a man descends into rage, obsession and an abstract sense of reality when his wife suffers multiple miscarriages. I loved this book. It was so lyrical and beautifully written, a bit eerie but I enjoyed it.

I honestly have no idea what I think of this.
I think it was a weird metaphor/fable about aging and fertility and the trials of marriage. Maybe.

There was a bear. And a squid (but not a squid, a whale, but not a whale, a ghost).
I think someone smart needs to explain this to me. 🤷‍♀️

Went to visit the in-laws - and library sale! SCORE! Any recommendations on which to read first? 😁

My_novel_obsession I vote for The House of Special Purpose - I have that on my TBR but haven‘t gotten to it yet. 6y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled @Anovelobsession I think so too! John Boyne is my new love. I can‘t believe I got a copy of this for $1.50. Woo hoo! 6y
Zelma Yay! One Flew Over the Cuckoo‘s Nest is a quick read and very good. Told from a different point of view that the movie, which makes it even more interesting. 6y

ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled @zelma - Cuckoo was an impulse purchase but it‘s been one of those “I should get around to reading that” books! 6y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled @Dragon Thanks for the warning!! Looking forward to both of these. 6y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled @Nebklvr yay! Just what Im in the mood for!! 🍁 6y

It was well-written, but the fairy tale/allegory didnt engage me like I thought it would. The fetus-eating was a pretty compelling start, though.

Lots of reading this month, & I'm not done yet 😉.
And lots of good stuff - The Passenger, Broken Monsters, & The Couple Next Door, to name a few.
But this fable about marriage, loss, & devotion stole my heart. It's a difficult read - heavy symbolism requires a lot of thinking on the reader's part. But it's just so beautifully composed. For anyone looking for something different, I recommend this one ❤️

sprainedbrain Nice stats, and thank you for the rec! 8y

This is a fable about marriage, the toll of miscarriages, the distance that grows when one spouse takes on a new role that the other isn't prepared for. This book won't be for everyone, but man, is it beautifully written! With mesmerizing images & heart-wrenching truths on every page, this is a book best read in a few short sessions, to keep the spell cast by the author intact. Pick it up when you want an adult fairytale, or a challenging read.

Sweettartlaura @akfreeborn I loved it😍 8y

I got to spend my first night of vacation finishing Broken Monsters. I get to start #135 for 2016 next!

respekt1111 Yay, I'm on vacation too! Have you read Shining Girls by Lauren Beukes? That's all I've read by her. 8y
Sweettartlaura @respekt1111 I have, & I loved it❤️. I liked it more than Broken Monsters, if I'm being honest. But I think that may be chalked up to Broken Monsters being her debut? (Not positive, but I think so.). So she definitely got better with the Shining Girls. Which makes me excited for whatever's next😊 8y
respekt1111 Awesome. I may check out Broken Monsters here soon😀👍 8y
Sweettartlaura @respekt1111 Let me know what you think when you do😊 8y

#Booktober Day 11 - Longest Title

This is definitely the longest title of any book on my shelves!

RealLifeReading How is the book? 8y
BooksForYears @RealLifeReading It's a beautifully bonkers, novel-length fairytale 👍👍 8y
TheWordJar This looks like a great book! It made me chuckle because I was just teaching about sentences being padded with prepositional phrases yesterday. This definitely fits the bill! 8y

Ok, @Litsy friends... I need a suggestion to recommend for my book club's read next month. I want something spooky for October. These are the ones I already own that are un-read. Which one should I nominate? And... Go!

The_Literary_Jedi My first instinct is to say The Girl With All The Gifts but The Seance also seems interesting. I would probably go with The Seance; more psychological suspense than the other 8y
ReadingOver50 Let the Right One In was really good. 8y

Eyelit Let the Right One In. So good. Creepy on a variety of levels. 8y
LeahBergen I enjoyed The Seance but didn't find it very spooky. Maybe The Haunting of Hill House? 8y
LeahBergen I've heard that I Remember You is scary. 😯 8y
Sweettartlaura Great comments - keep 'em coming!🙂 8y
alisonrose The Woman in White is so good! But maybe a bit long for a book club pick? If everyone is okay with that, that'd be my pick 😊 8y
moranadatter I'd go with The Haunting of Hill House or The Woman in White. 8y
[DELETED] 2232195534 You've got some good suggestions here. If you want more contemporary, I'd go with Ruth Ware's book and the creepy glass house. If more vintage, The Haunting Of Hill House - another creepy house. Or a duo read/either-or with 'creepy house' as a theme. We do that sometimes in our mystery group. Enjoy! 😱😳 8y
Onioons The Girl with all the Gifts gets my vote! 8y

My love of all things visceral and raw is why I like this book so much. It hurts, but in a good way.
