Here is the American starlet: discovered, disrobed, displaced, disused, disgorged. In more than thirty haunting, visceral poetic portraits, acclaimed poet and actress Amber Tamblyn contemplates the interior lives of women who glimmered on-screen and crashed in lifefigures as diverse as Frances Farmer and Brittany Murphy, Jayne Mansfield and Dana Plato, Jean Harlow and Sharon Tate, Heather O'Rourke and Dominique Dunne and Marilyn Monroe. Their stories invite us behind the eyes of a century's worth of women, the adored and the disappeared.

I hadn't known that Amber Tamblyn is a poet or that she is friends with Roxane Gay. So excited that I got to see them both & got this book to read! Also, they both talked positively about being in therapy & that made me so happy! Wonderful, brilliant feminists reducing mental health stigma!

I saw this referenced somewhere recently and thought it sounded intriguing. Tamblyn has produced lovely if often dark poetry based on the lives of actresses who died young or tragically. I‘ll be checking out Tamblyn‘s other work. Well done.

#LitsyPoetry365 Day 90 - Dana Plato

And on this last day of Women's History Month, this is the last poem I'll be sharing from Amber Tamblyn's collection.

ValerieAndBooks Thanks for sharing-- her book is definitely now in my TBR. 8y

BookBoggart I honestly don't get it... all I think is her dad kept her in a cellar. That's literally all I can picture. =/ 8y

#LitsyPoetry365 Day 79 - Judith Barsi

To understand more about the imagery in this poem, check out the Wikipedia page for Judith Barsi. Be forewarned that it's a very tragic story.

Christine Though I am happy to honor her memory, wish there wasn't a tragic Judith Barsi story to know about (and also wish I hadn't originally learned about it through my then 10-year-old film buff son, who read about it in his endless online movie research…that brought about a not-easy learning moment 😔). 8y
mcipher Wow that was sad. I still don't like the poem, but poor kid. She was born the same year as me, it's so crazy to think about. 8y
MadCatRamble God...I haven't read her in ages. I remember being both drawn to and repulsed by the rawness of her work. I may need to read her again, now that I'm older with a child of my own. 8y
Bibliogirl What a horrendous story of family violence. It's very upsetting reading. 8y
BooksForYears @Bibliogirl @mcipher @christine @MalinJames The poet certainly doesn't shy away from the deep and dark. 8y

Sace I have an actress friend who periodically shows me the casting calls she receives. They are pretty much this 80% of the time. 😔 8y

In a major poetry mood so I'm diving into my #spiritanimal Amber Tamblyn's latest collection for the thousandth time since I skidded into a book store on the way to a theatre event and read the poems out loud to my friend who unknowingly subjected herself to a reading when she suggested the outing in the first place.
