Empire in Black and Gold: Shadows of the Apt 1
Empire in Black and Gold: Shadows of the Apt 1 | Adrian Tchaikovsky
12 posts | 9 read | 20 to read
The first volume in a dramatic and colourful new fantasy series, Shadows of the Apt, concerns the fight for survival against a menacingly regimented empire. Seventeen years ago Stenwold witnessed the Wasp Empire storming the city of Myna in a brutal war of conquest. Since then he has preached vainly against this threat in his home city of Collegium, but now the Empire is on the march, with its spies and its armies everywhere, and the Lowlands lie directly in its path. All the while, Stenwold has been training youthful agents to fight the Wasp advance, and the latest recruits include his niece, Che, and his mysterious ward, Tynisa. When his home is violently attacked, he is forced to send them ahead of him and, hotly pursued, they fly by airship to Helleron, the first city in line for the latest Wasp invasion. Stenwold and Che are Beetle-kinden, one of many human races that take their powers and inspiration each from a totem insect, but he also has allies of many breeds: Mantis, Spider, Ant, with their own particular skills. Foremost is the deadly Mantis-kinden warrior, Tisamon, but other very unlikely allies also join the cause. As things go from bad to worse amid escalating dangers, Stenwold learns that the Wasps intend to use the newly completed railroad between Helleron and Collegium to launch a lightning strike into the heart of the Lowlands. Then he gathers all of his agents to force a final showdown in the engine yard ...

Great fantasy series with multi-layered characters from one of my favorite authors! I read the first two books now and will continue this soon.

Lola is reading as well #dogsoflitsy

Shadows of the Apt is a great epic fantasy series written by Adrian Tchaikovsky.

It spans 10 books and instead of having familiar #fantasy creatures like orcs and dwarves, this one has insect-kinden. Each species shares the characteristics of their respective insect.

We‘ve got hardworking ants, brilliant mantis fighters, stubborn and sturdy beetles, etc. And then one day the wasps attack....

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

TobeyTheScavengerMonk This series rules so hard! 6y

Because I need a new series #fantasy and here we‘ve got ten books finished about humans that are different because they‘re insect-kinden. There‘s wasp people and ant people and bug people and I find the premise intriguing.

KarenUK Awww...... Shepherds are just the prettiest 😍💕 6y

1. *Tries to think of a way to not say chocolate chip cookies. Fails.*
2. I‘ve recently decided that I want to read every Adrian Tchaikovsky book. Since he‘s super-prolific and writes in lots of genres he seems like a good pick.
3. My teenage self used to crush on Sailor Mercury, but since I‘ve been getting into Steven Universe lately I‘ll say Amethyst.
4. Night owl with a tendency to fall asleep early against my will

BookmarkTavern Chocolate chip cookies are an excellent choice! 6y

This is as wild as I'm willing to go for #BooksInTheWild - my kitchen table, which I wiped down twice before fetching the books.
Frankly, I have an #Obsession about pristine books. Probably already a case of OCD - no food, no drink, no hand cream, no dirty/greasy fingers,...
I'm glad I converted to Kindle mainly, because I can keep it clean, no broken spines, no bookmarks that could rub off colour on the pages,...

readingjedi Same! You can't spoil/soil an ebook & less than perfect books trigger me something horrid! 6y
AlaMich I‘m the opposite. I mean, I don‘t like dirty, falling-apart books, but I kind of like it when they look read and well-loved. 6y
Caroline2 Me too! I sometimes let me hands stay dry and uncomfortable at night because I worry about getting hand cream on my book!!! 😥 6y

I go to the Book of the New Sun well a lot, so even though its main character ends up ruling the world, I'm going with a different series.

In the Shadows of the Apt books the Wasp Empire wants to #ruletheworld and it's up to the Beetles, Ants, Moths, Flies, and Mantises of the Lowlands to stop them... if they can stop fighting amongst themselves. #JuneTunz

I wonder who the character is on the cover ??
I really enjoyed this book but i think i really like "children of time" more . He does do great characters though , and magical , pretty good world building , am having a little holiday away from reality at the moment by beginning this series , i will see how i go with the second but i would put this up ther with david eddings and george rr martin not to mention terry brooks !! Its good real good .

TobeyTheScavengerMonk I've read the first 4 and, other than the pacing being a little wonky, they are all excellent. 8y
chapter_fifty2017 Thanks for that , you are right about the pacing , i just couldnt put my finger on it . I highly recommend you read " Children of time " if u haven't already it was practically perfect. 8y

For #shadows #feistyfeb how about the best epic fantasy series you haven't read? Adrian Tchaikovsky's Shadows of the Apt.

TobeyTheScavengerMonk @saresmoore These are by my other auto-buy author Adrian Tchaikovsky. Don't know your feeling on epic fantasy, but these books are a great fantasy/steam mix in a world where the Beetle, Ant, Moth and Mantis peoples of the Lowlands must defend themselves against the might of the Wasp Empire. Sounds crazy, but they're truly excellent. 8y
saresmoore Actually, they sound fascinating! Bonus: something my husband might enjoy. Thank you for sharing! 8y
