Outlaw Marriages
Outlaw Marriages: The Hidden Histories of Fifteen Extraordinary Same-Sex Couples | Rodger Streitmatter
6 posts | 4 read | 45 to read
For more than a century before gay marriage became a hot-button political issue, same-sex unions flourished in America. Pairs of men and pairs of women joined together in committed unions, standing by each other for richer for poorer, in sickness and in health for periods of thirty or fortysometimes as many as fiftyyears. In short, they loved and supported each other every bit as much as any husband and wife. In Outlaw Marriages, cultural historian Rodger Streitmatter reveals how some of these unions didnt merely improve the quality of life for the two people involved but also enriched the American culture. Among the high-profile couples whose lives and loves are illuminated in the following pages are Nobel Peace Prize winner Jane Addams and Mary Rozet Smith, literary icon Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas, author James Baldwin and Lucien Happersberger, and artists Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg.

In honor of my upcoming 20th wedding anniversary: We took group dance lessons to prepare for our wedding song (John Denver‘s “A Song for All Lovers”). In the class, everyone brought their song to play and we were all instructed to dance along as if at a real wedding. Our turn came. Expecting a soft acoustic guitar, instead we heard Stealers Wheel‘s “Stuck in the Middle with You”! Dancing to “clowns to the left of me, jokers to the right” (con‘t)

Readergrrl ... while everyone looked strangely at us has become one of our favorite stories to tell! So here‘s my marriage theme song! And it fits perfectly!! #SundaySecrets (edited) 6y

#PhotoADayNov16 Day 1 - November TBR (part 2)

Not only is it #TBRTuesday but it's the first day of #NonFictionNovember - here is my (overly ambitious) non-fiction #TBR.

Each of the reads fits into the four categories for Non-Fiction November: New, Controversial, Important, and Fascinating. The only book not pictured is OUTLAW MARRIAGES by Roger Streitmatter, as I'll be reading that on my e-reader.

the_hibernator Is Maus considered nonfiction? 8y
BooksForYears @the_hibernator It is... a graphic memoir/creative nonfiction hybrid (at least that's how I'm filing it 🙂) 8y
