Jimmy's Blues and Other Poems
Jimmy's Blues and Other Poems | James Baldwin
7 posts | 8 read | 5 to read
All of the published poetry of James Baldwin, including six significant poems previously only available in a limited edition During his lifetime (19241987), James Baldwin authored seven novels, as well as several plays and essay collections, which were published to wide-spread praise. These books, among them Notes of a Native Son, The Fire Next Time, Giovannis Room, and Go Tell It on the Mountain, brought him well-deserved acclaim as a public intellectual and admiration as a writer. However, Baldwins earliest writing was in poetic form, and Baldwin considered himself a poet throughout his lifetime. Nonetheless, his single book of poetry, Jimmys Blues, never achieved the popularity of his novels and nonfiction, and is the one and only book to fall out of print. This new collection presents James Baldwin the poet, including all nineteen poems from Jimmys Blues, as well as all the poems from a limited-edition volume called Gypsy, of which only 325 copies were ever printed and which was in production at the time of his death. Known for his relentless honesty and startlingly prophetic insights on issues of race, gender, class, and poverty, Baldwin is just as enlightening and bold in his poetry as in his famous novels and essays. The poems range from the extended dramatic narratives of Staggerlee wonders and Gypsy to the lyrical beauty of Some days, which has been set to music and interpreted by such acclaimed artists as Audra McDonald. Nikky Finneys introductory essay reveals the importance, relevance, and rich rewards of these little-known works. Baldwins many devotees will find much to celebrate in these pages. From the Trade Paperback edition.

#AuthorAMonth - July - James Baldwin: When considering where to start this rereading venture I recalled an admission made by the author in an interview that I had read awhile back. James Baldwin thought of himself as a poet first, not a novelist, not an essayist. He filled sheets of paper with poems and then later fleshed them out into stories or longer compositions.👇🏽

Nute So last night I started our reacquaintance here, Jimmy‘s Blues, with his poetic voice that strays from the usual rhythmical beats and metaphorical tendencies, instead syncopating with jazz inflections and shifting structure of stanzas, displaying an unrestrained freedom to tell the bitter truth and nature of this world in the ways that he chooses. He‘s blunt, but with requirement for a lesson was needed THEN and, sadly, NOW!
Always recommended!

“For while the tale of how we suffer, and how we are delighted, and how we may triumph is never new, it always must be heard. There isn't any other tale to tell, it's the only light we've got in all this darkness.”

James Baldwin, Sonny's Blues

A poetry collection which addresses themes of race, gender, class, and poverty; Baldwin‘s verse is as engaging as his other works.

I want so badly to be James Baldwin when I grow up. There isn't anything I've read, seen, or heard of him that doesn't throw me into a tailspin. I want to use his words like a blanket and lie in its warmth until I'm not me anymore. Brilliant doesn't begin to cover it. #amreading #bookworm #bibliophile #bookish #booknerdigans #bookblogger #tsundoku #greatreads #readmorebooks #coolgirlsread

My attention span is suffering thanks to a massive plane plague I picked up while traveling but I can do poetry! I didn't know James Baldwin wrote poems, and there are some powerful ones here.

Carol Hope you're feeling better soon. That's the worst part of being sick, I think, is the inability to focus. "I'm surrounded by books but can't really read any!" I'm pulling for you! 8y
Zelma Plane plague is the worst! I hate getting sick after traveling and it always seems to happen. I once came down with a horrific cold literally as the plan was landing. 8y
