#AuthorAMonth - July - James Baldwin: When considering where to start this rereading venture I recalled an admission made by the author in an interview that I had read awhile back. James Baldwin thought of himself as a poet first, not a novelist, not an essayist. He filled sheets of paper with poems and then later fleshed them out into stories or longer compositions.👇🏽
“For while the tale of how we suffer, and how we are delighted, and how we may triumph is never new, it always must be heard. There isn't any other tale to tell, it's the only light we've got in all this darkness.”
James Baldwin, Sonny's Blues
A poetry collection which addresses themes of race, gender, class, and poverty; Baldwin‘s verse is as engaging as his other works.

Tried to do a little reading at dinner, but this is way too heavy for all the distractions!
I want so badly to be James Baldwin when I grow up. There isn't anything I've read, seen, or heard of him that doesn't throw me into a tailspin. I want to use his words like a blanket and lie in its warmth until I'm not me anymore. Brilliant doesn't begin to cover it. #amreading #bookworm #bibliophile #bookish #booknerdigans #bookblogger #tsundoku #greatreads #readmorebooks #coolgirlsread
My attention span is suffering thanks to a massive plane plague I picked up while traveling but I can do poetry! I didn't know James Baldwin wrote poems, and there are some powerful ones here.
