Geisha: A Life
Geisha: A Life | Mineko Iwasaki, Randee Brown
For more than four decades, Mineko Iwasaki has lived within the boundaries of powerful but invisible constraints. With this autobiography, Mineko eloquently removes the veil that has long concealed the geisha tradition. Captivating and poignant, Mineko's book is filled with moments of great strength and delicate beauty, making this a brave and luminous revelation.

I read memoirs of a Geisha a long time ago. This book is a memoir of the Geiko who inspired that story. I don‘t remember much about it, but other than being fictionalised he did a fairly good job of being faithful (though I do think their was some confusion between the Geisha and the girls in the pleasure district still).
While I would have liked this to be a bit more in depth, I definitely learned a lot about the topic!

This is a memoir written by the ex-geisha whose life becomes the main inspiration for Memoirs of a Geisha.

Worth reading if you're a big fan of Memoirs of a Geisha or you want to know the real life of a geisha. Arthur Golden was doing his research very well, but not all of he said on the book were accurate.

I'm glad I read it but feel it wasn't as in depth as I'd assumed it would be.
I'd expected industry secrets and revelation but found it quite bland and with minimal feeling.

Struggling with this... I am halfway through. I don't feel much for her at the moment but assume I should...
I'm unsure if it's the writing as it seems removed from the actual experience.
But will keep going!

This us a book club read. I've read a number of books and accounts of this profession but this is billed as the greatest geisha in Japan.
My book club are attempting to read books from a more diverse range of countries this year and so far it's been successful and interesting!

This book was deep. The level of openness was incredible. Quite different compared to what a Geisha is portrayed to be in our society. I knew the stereotypical Geisha wasn't anything close to what a Geisha truly is but I had no idea how wrong it was. Very tender read about the strength and perseverance of a brave young woman.

Fascinating look into a lost art. Iwasaki‘s perspective is distinctly Japanese and explores the burdens and joys of purposeful, refined perfection

Last book on my geisha kick that I re-read. Hello, I'm geisha diva Mineko Iwasaki and Arthur Golden stole my story for his fictional book Memoirs of a Geisha. I'm now retired, famous and sitting on my silk kimono butt gorging on my bento boxes and acting like an Asian Mariah Carey. Plus, everyone hates me because I exposed the truth about geisha world. Read me!

Day 11: Life. Instead of trying to find titles with 'life' in it, I decided I would do books about a person's life. It was either that or post a picture of my copy of Bonk by Mary Roach. #junebookbugs @RealLifeReading

If you have read or are considering reading Memoirs of a Geisha, read this instead. Mineko Iwasaki narrates her life as a geisha and clears up a lot of the misconceptions of what a geisha is. Plus she sounds like kind of a baller.

I'm not sure why the titles are different because I'm pretty sure it's the same memoir. I liked this but didn't love it. I was a huge fan of Memoirs of a Geisha and reading this true account was very eye opening.

TheNextBook Research: Geisha, A Life is the US title for this book. 8y
