My kids loved this movie and game when they were younger but I don‘t remember reading the book to them?! I came across an old copy in a discard pile and decided to revisit the story. The movie and game are better than the book but the illustrations are great. 😂 #pop22 ~ book with the name of a board game in the title

Cinfhen I don‘t remember the game or the book 🤷🏼‍♀️How are you feeling?? Thinking of you ♥️ 2y
Cortg @Cinfhen Good! Sore throat, slight cough and sniffles. Thanks for asking! MIL is still hanging in at hospice 😥 2y

Zathura is a spinoff of Jumanji The original Jumanji movie stays close to the original book. Zathura was also made into a pretty fun movie, but there connection to Jumanji was never made within its plot. And the movie is quite a bit different from the book. Two brothers are playing outside and discover the game Jumanji. However, it contains a second board with a trip to Zathura.

LibrarianRyan The boys begin to play, and just like Jumanji strange things start to happen. The house ends up in space, there is a meteor shower, and robots come to life to kill aliens. However, the moive goes about an hour longer than the book. In the book, the oldest brother is sent back in time 5 hours and the story ends with him NOT playing the game. While I did like the book, this is one time I can say for sure the movie was better. 3y
jessjess I remember that movie! 3y
Kenyazero I saw this movie and didn't realize it was connected to Jumanji in the book! Glad to know it wasn't just a wannabe Jumanji in space after all. 3y

This SF book is great for PR. This book tells the story about how two brothers, Walter and Danny, got sucked into a board game. After one of Walter and Danny's frequent brother fights, they stumbled upon a game called Jumanji. In this box was a board game that led to planet Zathura. Their adventure game to Zathura turned into a real fight for their lives. Will the boys be able to work together to get back home? Read and find out!

Keishla.O Once Danny rolled the dice to this game, he and his house were transported to outer space, and just like that they were in the game. They dodge meteor showers, are overcome by gravity, battle a robot and a pirate, etc. Can the boys work together to beat the game? Do they make it back home? Read it and find it! #ucflae3414sp20
(edited) 5y
Keishla.O UDL 8.3 (Foster collaboration and community) can be met by having the students work together to think of ways the boys in the book can resolve their brother quarrels and beat the game.
ESOL strategy 30 (Encourage the use of diagrams and drawings as aids to identify concepts and seeing relationships) can be met by having the students make their own Jumaji game and follow along with it as they read.
5y

Ryan_R I also did the polar express for mine, so same author. I think his work is great! 5y
DrSpalding This would make for an excellent shared reading and it is of course science fiction. The movie is actually very good. This author as noted by your peers is an excellent one that many students are familiar with due to Jumanji and the Polar Express! 5y

This SF book written and illustrated by Chris Van Allsburg follows two boys who are home while their parents go out for the evening and come across a magical board game. When they start to play the game they go on a crazy adventure with many obstacles, but they must finish the game.
This is a great book for students to learn about science and reading at the same time. #UCFLAE3414F19

Mwinship This book would be great as a RA. You can use this lesson plan to incorporate science, specially space science, into your lesson using this book: http://teacher.scholastic.com/lessonplans/spacescience/
The EL strategy 47 and UDL guideline 1.3 about providing information to fill in gaps and offering alternatives for visual information align with this RA and lesson plan.
5y
YvetteE This sounds like Jumanji! This book sounds adventurous and ideal for readers who love science! 5y
DrSpalding Now, you could create an author study and read aloud these books while you share the amazing work created by Chris. 5y

This SF book is a sequel to the Juamji book, the author uses the same idea of the Jumanji game board but instead of the theme being a jungle Zathura is a game that comes to life in outer space. This book would be good as a RA and then students can work in pairs. http://www.houghtonmifflinbooks.com/features/thepolarexpress/tg/zathura.shtml

Estradan provides a list of various lesson plans you can use with this book but my favorite is a writing lesson about how this book blends science and fiction and having them research and create charts about the different space elements in the book. This aligns with UDL 3.4 of maximizing transfer and generalization and it also aligns with ESOL strategy 40 of having students prepare card files specific to the space element they wrote about. #ucflae3414su19 5y
DrSpalding You are easily aligning appropriate strategies and principles. I like the idea of using this along with graphic organizers and writing. Helpful, high-quality resource. 5y

Zathura by Chris Van Allsburg is a cool SF book. It is about brothers who play a game that take them to space. The drawings are amazing. I would present this book as a PR, and two people can take turns reading as the brothers. This website is a teacher‘s guide to reading this book in class, which would be very useful. http://www.houghtonmifflinbooks.com/features/thepolarexpress/tg/zathura.shtml

jmartucci I would use the ESOL strategy 2 to encourage cooperation and small groups. I would use UDL 3.1 and activate their background knowledge about having siblings or friends that they interact with. #ucflae3414su19 5y

Zathura by Chris Van Allsburg (SF) - I first learned about this Caldecott Award winner during the author study assignment! I was drawn to this story because it is the sequel to Jumanji, which is an awesome major motion picture! Zathura is about two boys who are travel on an intergalactic adventure when their house is brought through space. This book would be a perfect RA when teaching your class about space due to the amazing illustrations!

alexialovesmith http://readingtokids.org/Books/BookView.php?pag=5&bookID=00000510 This resource has great discussion topics that meet ELS13 in regard to preview and review activities and UDL2.1 by clarifying vocabulary within the text. There is a lot of things you can do with this book! I love it! #ucflae3414su19 5y

#UCFLAE3414SU19 This SF book written and illustrated by Chris Van Allsburg follows two brother, Danny and Walter. The bickering duo come across an out of this world board game that tasks them with multiple riddle like missions on their way to the planet Zathura. The process brings them together in the end with funny events throughout. This would make a great RA or IR. Using http://www.houghtonmifflinbooks.com/features/zathura/educators.shtml

Zathura is a SF picture book written and illustrated by Chris Van Allsburg. This book is the sequel to Caldecott award winning picture book Jumanji. Zathura tells the story about two brothers, Danny and Walter, who play a space adventure board game called Zathura. Only, this isn‘t just some normal board game, this game takes them into outer space and as the boys read each card, something happens to them in outer space. #ucflae3414su19

MeganKlein As the boys play this game and fight for survival in the intergalactic world they learn more about the importance of brotherhood. I would teach this book through SR and I would also do an AS on this author. Chris Van Allsburg has written some amazing picture books that have been adapted into movies (Jumanji, Zathura, The Polar Express), and I think a lot of students would enjoy his books. UDL strategy 2.1 (clarifying vocab. and symbols) would be 5y
MeganKlein needed to help students understand some of the verbiage used within the text. ESOL strategy 17 (provide context support) will definitely help ELLs and striving readers make meaning with the text and comprehend most of the story. This website contains a teacher‘s guide to the book Zathura. There are guiding discussion questions, writing lessons, and a summary of teaching ideas. 5y

A good story for the summer reading theme, “A Universe of Stories” ☺️ I really like movie and never realized that this one could be a book too, so I decided to read it (since I read Jumanji and this stems off of that book). Obviously has some different scenarios than what was showcased in the movie, but what bummed me out was that the boys didn‘t even get to say “Zathura” to end the game. Can‘t always be same, I know.

This SF book is a classic. The theme of this book is about relationships. The two brothers are classic brothers as the older one makes fun of the younger one and the younger just wants to play. They go on a crazy adventure (which includes non gravity and I tried to make my picture reflect that). In the end they end up not fighting and playing catch. This would be a great PR. The lesson plan I have is meant for 6-8, but could be modified:

GGallegos http://www.readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/lesson-plans/finding-science-b... UDL principle 7.1 as this book offers a different variety of books. ESOL strategy 6 as I would check to see that they understand the story. #UCFLAE3414SuB18 6y

Zathura by Chris Van Allsburg is a SF story that will keep your students making predictions! They can write down their predictions and share then with a partner. This book is good for SR. It is also the sequel to Jumanji. An ESOL Strategy would be 7 which is to show students how to use graphic organizers like semantic mapping and imaging. They will be using imaging alot in this book! A UDL would be 3.3

emilybanne Which is Guide information processing, visualization, and manipulation. We will have to guide the students to visualize by drawing, writing or performing. One resource I found is: http://www.houghtonmifflinbooks.com/features/zathura/educators.shtml this website gives all the material and resources needed to host a Zathura event! It can be a really fun classroom transformation! #UCFLAE3414SUB18 6y

Zathura by Chris Van Allsburg , a SF book. The story of two brothers , Danny and Walter , did not get along well. While playing , rough outside Danny found a box of a game named Jumanji. They started playing the game and suddenly , the house moved, and suddenly they where out in space. They go back and move a space in the board , that said earth. Then Walter losses his gravity. Every time they move the dice something different happens.

ERodriguez In the end Walter roll the dice and part of his body was disappearing .Danny worries and wanted to tell him something he never had told him. After they started to spin and ended back in their back yard playing. In the end Walter was nicer .Danny see a box and Walter say “no you don‘t want to look at that box.” (edited) 6y

This SF written and illustrated by Chris Van Allsburg is a classic tale for the classroom. This space centered book tells a great story of two brothers who come across a game that tests their relationship and ends with their bond becoming stronger. Perfect for PR. EL 40- prepare individual card files of subject area specific vocab (space). UDL 2.5 illustrate through multiple media #ucflae3414f17

Zathura wirtten and illustrated by Chris Van Allsburg is a wonderful SF that follows brothers Danny and Walter as they go on an adventure through space after finding the game. Met with robots, Zorgons, and alternate gravity the brothers have to learn to get along and work together to get home. With vivid illustrations and compelling dialogue this would be perfect for a PR. #ucflae3414f17
