Stormbird
Stormbird | Conn Iggulden
King Henry V - the great Lion of England - is long dead. In 1437 his gentle son comes of age and takes the throne. Frail in body and mind, King Henry VI is dependent on his supporters to run his kingdom. Richard, Duke of York, however, believes that without a strong king England will fall.

All of these books were written by my GCSE English Lit teacher. He was a very young man with very floppy hair who once told my whole class our course work had been thrown away because he had been in a car accident and they all had his blood on... looking back this was certainly a lie as he didn‘t appear to have a scrape on him 🧐 He was one of my favourite teachers and he was writing his first novel at the same time as not marking my work 😂

LeahBergen Great story! 😆😆 3y

I chose this book to get an overview of the War of the Roses. It has sparked quite an interest for me and is only the beginning! Stormbird does a great job of laying the groundwork with the major characters and a little fiction to speed up and jazz up the story.

Conn Iggulden created a fascinating first novel in a series sure to be a hit. He illuminates an historical period rife with peace and war. He brings the characters in Stormbird back to life making the reader feel like they stepped back in time. Highly recommended historical fiction!

Finished another door stopper. I actually liked this historical novel so much that I will read the second part right away. I do need to brush up a little bit on the War of the Roses. well-written and really worthwhile the time.

How many like reading in 'solitude? Oddly enough I find reading in solitude, comforting and enjoy my reading time much more. I think that is because I am home alone all day and it is very pleasant having that time to myself. I can read anywhere, noise does not bother me when reading a book...but there's something special about being surrounded in quietness.

Do you like to read in solitude?

A fantastic story of one of the most interesting parts of English history! This first one explores the tensions and betrayals which will eventually lead to the Wars of the Roses; the weakness of the new king Henry, his marriage, the loss of British territory in France, Duke of York slowly taking over government.

Fantastic pacing so you got lots of lovely detail but weren‘t bogged down by it. Fully rounded, flawed characters. And still surprises!

Mr Iggulden (Conn Iggulden to you guys) was my English teacher. He was a young teacher with floppy hair and a lot of stories writing in his spare time. He was a lot of fun. I still find it strange when I see his name on here and in book shops. It's no wonder I got an A* in English Language 😄
