Fences | August Wilson
Drama / 5m, 2f / 1 Set Winner of the New York Drama Critic's and Tony Awards as well as the Pulitzer Prize, this sensational drama starred James Earl Jones as Troy Maxson, a former star of the Negro baseball leagues who now works as a garbage man in 1957 Pittsburgh. Excluded as a Negro from the major leagues during his prime, Troy's bitterness takes it's toll on his relationships with both his wife and son who now wants his own chance to play. "One of the great characters in American drama." - The New York Post "One of the richest experiences I have ever had in the theatre. I wasn't just moved. I was transfixed." - The New York Post "A blockbuster and a major American play." - New York Daily News

Wonderful play, certainly deserving of all of the accolades it‘s received: Pulitzer, Tony and so many more. Knowing that James Earl Jones originated the role had me picturing him and hearing his voice throughout. #ReadHarder2020 #challenge #6 #ownvoices #BLMReadinglist

ChasingOm Not a bad way to spend an afternoon, with his voice in your head. 😄 4y

Tonidreads328 I seen the 2016 film adaptation with Denzel Washington, and my blood pressure went through the roof! Rose... Dear Rose. I must read this book Thank you for posting this Beautiful work of art. 4y
MsLeah8417 @Tonidreads328 I absolutely loved the film adaptation. Viola and Denzel were both amazing. It made me feel a bit better having not been able to see them perform the play on Broadway. Denzel made sure the feeling of the stage was present on the big screen. 4y

I actually finished this up last night. It has been a weird day—at 6:24am kids‘ school was cancelled due to fires. At 8 husband cancelled his classes, at 9 his CC closed. Air is crap. Took kid 2 and got a box of Boy Scout wreaths to deliver. Watched too much fire news. Did little reading. Got no exercise. Kid 2 is stir crazy. No school tomorrow! Little reading will happen.... maybe kid 2 and I will watch this movie. He loved this play!

Next up in my modern fiction slot. My high school freshman just read this in his English class, and he loved it. He wants me to read it and then he wants to watch the movie (unless they are watching it in class). And to think he was nervous about reading a play!

Don't you think I had dreams and hopes? What about my life? What about me? Don't you think it ever crossed my mind to want to know other men? That I wanted to lay up somewhere and forget about my responsibilities? That I wanted someone to make me laugh so I could feel good? You not the only one who's got wants and needs. But I held on to you, Troy. I took all my feelings, my wants and needs, my dreams...and I buried them inside you...

RanaElizabeth Did you get a chance to see this in the theater when it was out? Devastating. They did an excellent job of translating a play to the big-screen. 8y
moraghastie_author @RanaElizabeth no, not seen it yet. Was putting off until I'd read the play. Strongly suspect I'll be renting it this weekend!I've seen the trailer and both leads look like they've done amazing jobs. 8y
minkyb This is a phenomenal story as are the other plays in the cycle! 8y
moraghastie_author @minkyb yes! After reading this I'm definitely picking up the others. I write plays and love reading good ones that I can learn from. 8y

Watching/reading Fences and trying to decide if I want to assign it for the drama unit in my literature class. I usually teach Raisins in the Sun, but our new text doesn't have it. This new adaptation with Denzel Washington and Viola Smith is sooooo good.

GatheringBooks haven't heard of this one - will be sure to check it out 8y
LyndseyReads @GatheringBooks I had heard of the movie, but I had no idea it was based on an August Wilson play until I began looking through my textbook to choose an additional play. 8y

Perhaps our favorite speech from last night's awards ceremony was Viola Davis accepting the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. What an incredible and powerful speech.

She won for her role in Fences, a film adapted from the play of the same name by August Wilson. She's the first black woman to win an Oscar, Emmy, and Tony award for acting! 💃🏿

lynneamch Saw Fences on Broadway. So glad to know it will reach a broader audience with this movie. Viola Davis is awesome, isn't she? (Rhetorical question, of course.) ☺ 8y

Hoping to see the movie next weekend and wanted to read the play first. If the movie is 1/2 as good as the experience of reading the play, it will be magnificent.

Saw the movie New Years Eve and wanted to read the play! Both are just incredible and it translated to the screen very effectively. The characters are so deeply developed. I'm going to read more plays this year. They are quick reads and so satisfying.

Having seen the movie trailer, my mind's eye saw Viola Davis' "Rose" throughout this read. Happy scenes, sad scenes -- Viola was who I saw. But my mind registered relatives and friends. This quote is a testament to how a woman loves her man. Brings Aretha's "Try a Little Tenderness" to mind.

?I may get weary.
Women do get weary
wearin' the same shabby dress.
But to one who's weary . . .
try a little . . . try a little tenderness.?

Melkyl That scene blew me away. Her acting was so powerful. I agree that it brought to mind the powerful women I have been blessed to have known. 8y
Donna_sBookMinute @Melwink -- I can't wait to see it this weekend. I think it's gonna make me reminisce. They are both such great actors. 8y
Posemn What a great review @Donna_sBookMinute. I am really looking forward to seeing this movie ( and now I will stack the book as well) plus sing "try a little tenderness" all night now I suspect. ? 8y

Donna_sBookMinute @Posemn -- Thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed my post. And you're right about the song. I was hearing it as I prepared cookies for the oven and freezer. Last year I learned that when a song works it's way into your head like that, it's called an "ear worm." Makes sense. (edited) 8y

As early as page 3, this play had hold of me. My Daddy wasn't a garbage man. But he was a blue-collar worker -- a hard-working man like Troy and Bono. And these three traits were prominent in his character. "Fences" is a heart-warming story set in 1950s Pittsburgh. Some of the characters and phrases remind me of my upbringing in a Midwest steel town. I'm familiar with Wilson's other works; and looking forward to reading them all. #quote

We went to see Fences today. Wow - what a great movie. The story was stellar, and the performances were outstanding. I can't recommend this one enough.

Gulfsidemusing Saw the play in the mid 80s, shortly after it was written, at the Yale Repertory Theater in New Haven. Looking forward to the film! 8y
RanaElizabeth Saw it today too! We've loved August Wilson for awhile so it was amazing to see such stellar actors doing his work. The boyfriend cried! 8y

I just finished an impromptu read of August Wilson's "Fences." Wanted to read it before seeing the adaption this weekend. It was a very quick read (1) because of the page count; and (2) because the scenes, characters, and dialect are so familiar from my childhood. I felt like I was reading about people I or my family members knew. Every character is believable; and a few are endearing. I was fortunate to find a PDF before hardcover comes in.

Mariposa_Bookworm I took my mom to see the movie the day after Christmas. She is a HUGE Denzel Washington fan. The movie is well done. Both Denzel Washington and Viola Davis are so extremely talented! 8y
Donna_sBookMinute @Mariposa_Bookworm -- I am so looking forward to seeing it. But I simply HAD to read it first! Denzel is cool 😎. Viola Davis is a remarkable actress. 8y

Got this one from My LitBox. So much of this play hit home for me. My childhood, my father, my mother. This book healed a part of me that I never thought would be healed, but more than that, it's wonderfully written and pushes you to confront thoughts you're not entirely comfortable with facing. You're better for it in the end, though.

Eh... I'm glad I read it for the sake of having read August Wilson. This was one of those novels that made me hate the book because I hated the protagonist so very much. This Death of a Salesman but a black family. Im ready to watch the adaptation at Christmas time.
