This will complete my reading of three plays from August Wilson's Century Cycle. This one is set in a Pittsburgh boarding house; August, 1911. I love being able to relate a time frame to a family member's lifetime. My Dad was born just the month before. My maternal grandmother was age 19. Her firstborn, my Mother, didn't come along until four years later. The talk of the steel industry also hits home. #CenturyCycle #StagePlay

Having seen the movie trailer, my mind's eye saw Viola Davis' "Rose" throughout this read. Happy scenes, sad scenes -- Viola was who I saw. But my mind registered relatives and friends. This quote is a testament to how a woman loves her man. Brings Aretha's "Try a Little Tenderness" to mind.

?I may get weary.
Women do get weary
wearin' the same shabby dress.
But to one who's weary . . .
try a little . . . try a little tenderness.?

Melkyl That scene blew me away. Her acting was so powerful. I agree that it brought to mind the powerful women I have been blessed to have known. 8y
Donna_sBookMinute @Melwink -- I can't wait to see it this weekend. I think it's gonna make me reminisce. They are both such great actors. 8y
Posemn What a great review @Donna_sBookMinute. I am really looking forward to seeing this movie ( and now I will stack the book as well) plus sing "try a little tenderness" all night now I suspect. ? 8y

Donna_sBookMinute @Posemn -- Thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed my post. And you're right about the song. I was hearing it as I prepared cookies for the oven and freezer. Last year I learned that when a song works it's way into your head like that, it's called an "ear worm." Makes sense. (edited) 8y

As early as page 3, this play had hold of me. My Daddy wasn't a garbage man. But he was a blue-collar worker -- a hard-working man like Troy and Bono. And these three traits were prominent in his character. "Fences" is a heart-warming story set in 1950s Pittsburgh. Some of the characters and phrases remind me of my upbringing in a Midwest steel town. I'm familiar with Wilson's other works; and looking forward to reading them all. #quote

Pickpick

I just finished an impromptu read of August Wilson's "Fences." Wanted to read it before seeing the adaption this weekend. It was a very quick read (1) because of the page count; and (2) because the scenes, characters, and dialect are so familiar from my childhood. I felt like I was reading about people I or my family members knew. Every character is believable; and a few are endearing. I was fortunate to find a PDF before hardcover comes in.

Mariposa_Bookworm I took my mom to see the movie the day after Christmas. She is a HUGE Denzel Washington fan. The movie is well done. Both Denzel Washington and Viola Davis are so extremely talented! 8y
Donna_sBookMinute @Mariposa_Bookworm -- I am so looking forward to seeing it. But I simply HAD to read it first! Denzel is cool 😎. Viola Davis is a remarkable actress. 8y

Pelican71 Your description is on point. You're right, every character is believable and could be someone that we know. I hope to see it tomorrow. @Donna_sBookMinute 8y
TheNextBook I guess I need to make sure I read this one and soon! 8y
Alfoster Reminds me so much of A Raisin in the Sun which I loved to teach!😍 8y
Donna_sBookMinute @Alfoster -- I thought of "A Raisin in the Sun" too. Strong similarities. Yes, @TheNextBook -- Read this one. @Pelican71 -- I won't see it until Saturday. Enjoy. 8y
