Pickpick

I so enjoyed this and needed this, too. Whipple is a favorite! I thought some the characters almost over the top — hard to believe they were from the same family. But oh! Can she capture the internal monologue of despair. (If only they would TALK to each other…)

Sparklemn So jealous of your Persephone visit. I‘ll get there someday! 3y
Ruthiella I ❤️ Dorothy Whipple! I‘ve not read this title yet, though. 3y
Cathythoughts I have this book ! Looking forward to reading it now 👍❤️ 3y

I love Dorothy Whipple💞💞
Her books are warm and cosy. Her plotting is flawless and her characters are well formed and human in their flawed naive goodness, weakness, and wickedness.Immenselyly grateful for Persephone books for introducing me to her brilliant books.

Bailedbailed

I loved the writing of Dorothy Whipple, but I could not finish this book. There are three sisters, each living very different lives. One is married to an abusive monster and his actions with his children crushed my heart. I had to bail. 😢

On a brighter note, I learned how to brew a proper cup of tea while in England. ☕️

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Beautiful picture ❤️❤️ 6y
Liatrek Love the tea pot and cup ❤️ 6y
Weaponxgirl Never add the milk first 😉 6y

Reviewsbylola Noooooooooooooo. Bailing on a Persephone?! Unheard of! 😱 6y
Reviewsbylola Actually our British friend instructed us to add the milk first to break up the fat. 😂😂😂 @Weaponxgirl However her equally British brother agrees with you. (edited) 6y
Weaponxgirl As a British person I have argued with other brits who put the milk in first 😂 this includes my own family 6y
Weaponxgirl @Reviewsbylola I meant to reply to you with my last comment 6y
Reviewsbylola You all take your tea making very seriously! I just got lambasted for making a cup of mocha fireside. I‘m told that English Breakfast and Earl Gray are the only acceptable teas. 😆😆 @Weaponxgirl 6y
Weaponxgirl @Reviewsbylola we do. Well this can get very classed and region based too. My working class dad would just look at you and go just normal tea and would hate you if you gave him earl grey and I know northerners who will rip the shit out of me if I don‘t have Yorkshire tea in the house. 6y
Weaponxgirl @Reviewsbylola it‘s very serious business but sometimes just to upset everyone I put a variety of tea bags in one caddy and then make people play Russian roulette with tea. 😆 6y
Reviewsbylola Omg that‘s hilarious. @Weaponxgirl 6y
LeahBergen Noooooo!! Not a Dorothy Whipple! Not a Persephone! 😮😮 6y
LeahBergen I‘ll probably still buy this one, though. 😆😆 6y
LeahBergen @Reviewsbylola What is mocha fireside? 6y
Mdargusch Well I guess I will have to try it both ways @Weaponxgirl 🤣 6y
Mdargusch I hope you read it @LeahBergen so you can tell me if there‘s a happy ending. 6y
Reviewsbylola It‘s a flavor from David‘s Teas. @LeahBergen 6y
MemoirsForMe So how does one make a proper cup of tea? 6y
Mdargusch @UwannaPublishme I was told by a tea lover in London that you must boil the water, never microwave. And always use fresh water! The tea should be something like English breakfast. Steep for around 3-4 minutes(never more than 5!) and do not reheat it. Now - the debate is : add milk before the hot water to break up the fat in the milk. Or does one add the milk after the tea is brewed? Have I missed anything @Weaponxgirl ? 6y
Weaponxgirl @Mdargusch I don‘t think so. Microwaving tea is sacrilege it‘s true. What tends to happen with milk before tea bag when making in the cup is you can‘t get as good a colour generally in my experience. If it is milky it should have started out as strong tea with lots of milk added for the best flavour otherwise what was the point? 6y
Weaponxgirl For reference I like mine the colour of he man. 6y
Mdargusch That makes sense. I tried it your way just now! 👍🏼 @Weaponxgirl (edited) 6y
MemoirsForMe @Mdargusch @Weaponxgirl Great info! Thank you both. I can see that I haven‘t been steeping my tea long enough. And what if I don‘t add milk at all? I‘m not a big fan. Will that get me kicked out of tea sommelier school? 😁 6y
Weaponxgirl @UwannaPublishme some teas shouldn‘t be served with milk according to true tea coni suers so I think you are safe. I‘m just banging on about everyday Brit tea. 6y
Mdargusch Haha! @UwannaPublishme 😂. I‘ve grown to really like it in my English breakfast tea. It‘s a milder version of my usual coffee with creamer that I have every morning. Milk goes really well with that tea. 6y
DivineDiana I too have switched from morning coffee to English Breakfast Tea with non dairy cream. Started this after reading a British novel. 😉 6y
Mdargusch Ha! We are on the same wavelength @DivineDiana ! ☕️🇬🇧☕️ All I want to read are early 1900‘s British literature written by women! (edited) 6y

Was old timey aspirin laced with opiates or something? This is the second mention of it being used for something other than headaches. Also, don't drug your wife, William. You think you're being helpful but it makes you a creep!
