A Monstrous Commotion
A Monstrous Commotion: The Mysteries of Loch Ness | Gareth Williams
5 posts | 1 read | 3 to read
The Loch Ness Monster: a creature that should have died out with the dinosaurs, or a legend built on hoaxes and wishful thinking? Sir Peter Scott, internationally renowned naturalist and president of the World Wildlife Fund, was convinced that the Monster existed. So were senior scientists at London's Natural History Museum and Chicago University; they lost their jobs because they refused to renounce their belief in the creature. For decades, the scientific establishment was determined to quash attempts to investigate Loch Ness - until Nature, the world's greatest research journal, published an article by Peter Scott featuring underwater photographs of the Monster. Drawing extensively on new material, Gareth Williams takes a wholly original look at what really happened in Loch Ness. A Monstrous Commotion tells the story as never before: a gripping saga populated by colourful characters who do extraordinary things in pursuit of one of evolution's wildest cards. Meticulously researched and dazzlingly written, this book will appeal to anyone fascinated by nature and its mysteries - and to everyone who enjoys a beautifully crafted detective story with a strong cast of heroes and villains, plenty of twists and an unexpected ending.

Pickpick

Gareth Williams really has a gift for an engaging narrative, and I really liked that he waited until the end of the narrative to start unpicking who might have been hoaxing. Some fascinating people have believed passionately in Nessie.

I kinda don't wanna sleep. Just want to keep chasing Nessie!

I have a Loch Ness Monster plushie wearing a little tartan hat, but not here. It'd be the perfect thing to photograph with this book. I also have Princess, a very soft and sleek Plesiosaur my dad had custom made for me. She has sparkly semi-precious stone eyes and her tail curls perfectly around my hand. I can't find a pic of her either though. 😅

Gareth Williams is really good at putting together a narrative, as I already knew from his books on polio and smallpox. I find myself hoping he can argue me into believing in Nessie again, though so far he hasn't really shown his own opinion. 🐉

CrowCAH I am still fascinated with the Nessie, since I first saw a documentary on her when I was young. I still feel there is a real monster in the water, even though others have tried to disprove it. Great myth and legend!!! 😊 7y

My final haul from Wigtown! It is a wonderful book festival and a great place for bookish types to visit and explore. I'd love to go back someday.
