A thriller with echoes of William Faulkner and Harper Lee, The Bottoms is classic American storytelling in its truest, darkest, and more affecting form. Its 1933 in East Texas and the Depression lingers in the air like a slow moving storm. When a young Harry Collins and his little sister stumble across the body of a black woman who has been savagely mutilated and left to die in the bottoms of the Sabine River, their small town is instantly charged with tension. When a second body turns up, this time of a white woman, there is little Harry can do from stopping his Klan neighbors from lynching an innocent black man. Together with his younger sister, Harry sets out to discover who the real killer is, and to do so they will search for a truth that resides far deeper than any river or skin color. From the Trade Paperback edition.

I really enjoyed this intriguing mystery, set in east Texas in the 1930's. The atmosphere and setting were perfect for this story. Harry is a great protagonist and I just loved getting to know him and his family. His relationship with his grandmother was just 🥺🥺😍
4.5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐💫

Just stunning. Writing, language evokes the sultry hot summers, dank woods, muddy river bottom.Depression era, East Texas, small farming town, murder of women in the “bottoms” of the Sabine River. Racial tension, white festering hatred for blacks- lynching, burning, KKK- so immersed in this books harsh, gritty, tragic beauty, I read it in one night. On its way to @Laughterhp #LMPBC

How is it I‘ve never read a book by this author? How is it this incredible book has sat on my shelf for years like an undiscovered treasure?

This book is so good. Gritty, dark, dazzling writing. So much going on—race issues in very rural Texas in the 1930s, a serial killer, multiple mysteries. Amazing characters! I think Harry Collins will stick with me for a long time.

I hope the rest of group J enjoys this book!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Butterfinger I'm sure we will. 4y

Hey, fellow Group J-ers😃

What do you think of these options? All are listed as mysteries, and I tried to mix them up a little. Have you read any? Any that you would like to read or definitely don‘t want to read?

Butterfinger Wow! Tough. They all look great to me. I'm fine with any one. 5y
Laughterhp So I‘ve read The English Wife, The Wife Between Us and The Guest List. All are really amazing! I wouldn‘t want to reread any of them though. But the other 3 sound really interesting and I‘d be okay with any of them. 5y

Been reading a lot of things set around where I grew up—around East Texas. This image of early morning in the woods brought back vivid memories.
“...as daybreak was running like a broken egg yolk through the trees and birds were calling out that they were in search of breakfast...”
Good morning, folks.

This book is reminiscent of To Kill a Mocking Bird but in a darker way. Harry and Tom are out in the woods late at night and stumble upon a black woman murdered, in 1930s Texas. The tensions in the town simmering just below the surface explode when a second murder occurs this time a white woman and a black man gets lynched for it. But what is the truth? Harry and Tom are set to find out who the real killer is.

#recommendsday Another book from my 20+ years of journals that I absolutely adored.
An 11 year old boy finds the body of a young black woman in the woods. This opens an investigation and creates racial tension in his small town. If you can find it, read it!

Confession time: I get unsolicited recommendations from people all the time, and mostly it's because *they* loved it, not necessarily because there's something about it that I'm into. It's become a pet peeve of mine. But here's a rando #recommendedby a library patron that I actually put on the ol' TBR...I don't care much for crime/thriller/mystery, so something about our conversation must have struck me. Do you have any insight?
#ReadJanuary

Foxyfictionista I've never heard of this book. I have the same pet peeve. I read a lot of books so some people think that they can just recommend any old thing that they loved and that I'll also love it. I do enjoy knowing what other people think of the books they've read but I'll decide whether or not I'll give it a go. 8y
LindsayReads @Foxyfictionista Yes! I feel the same way. The worst is when friends insist I borrow their copy and then I sit on it for forever... 8y
Foxyfictionista @LindsayReads I know!! Except that when I borrow a book I feel obliged to read it as soon as possible so that I can return it. I turn people down now when they offer to lend me a book. My physical tbr stack is too big and I get stressed out if I need a book to jump the queue. It's too much pressure!!!! And don't even get me started on having to tell a friend that their book is rubbish... 😬 8y

ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled @Foxyfictionista How to you turn people down when they want to lend you a book? I would love some tips!! My TBR is out of control and I just can't 8y
Foxyfictionista @ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled.com I take take a picture at the beginning of every month of my tbr stacks (one of library books and one of books I've bought) and so when someone says 'I'll lend you a book' I whip out my phone, show them my pics, and say, 'Thank you, but ain't nobody got time for that.' 😀 8y
LindsayReads @Foxyfictionista oooh, you're sneaky!! 8y
Foxyfictionista @LindsayReads Indeed. But I have to control the madness! 8y
Suzze I was just looking at my 5 star reads over the last 20 or so years and was thinking of posting this for #recommendsday. It was fabulous! 8y
LindsayReads @Suzze That's great! I will not be so skeptical then! 8y
