Varney, the Vampyre
Varney, the Vampyre | James Malcolm Rymer, J M Rymer
7 posts | 3 read | 12 to read
Bannerworth Hall, Hampshire. Midnight. The night is woken by screams, from the bedroom of the beautiful and noble-hearted Flora. To their horror, her family discover that she has been the victim of a murderous attack. The Bannerworths are about to lose their home, to pay the debts of their dead father. The hunt is for his missing gold on, but then they begin to have doubts about their repulsive, hissing new neighbour, Sir Francis Varney, who is so eager to purchase the hall - and to marry the fair Flora! Their quest will take them from hall to charnel-house, and from village inn to deserted chancel. Can the Bannerworths - aided by Flora's fiance Charles Holland, Charles's uncle Admiral Bell, and the indomitable British Tar, Jack Pringle - defeat their terrible foe? and can they decipher the strange letter left by old Marmaduke Bannerworth, that seems to promise so much? Varney, the Vampyre, is one of the greatest of the Victorian penny romances, by one of its finest exponents -- the inimitable James Malcolm Rymer. First serialised between 1845 and 1847, it is one of the world's most enjoyable reads. It is also one of the major sources for Stoker's later masterpiece, Dracula.

😳 @ReadingRover you really spoiled me. This box is amazing! You were so thoughtful with your book selections. The bookish goodies are super fun. I LOVE the planchette magnet. I have a mini rubber duck collection at work (long story) so the black cat and Dracula duckies are coming with me to work today to add a little spice to the collection. Thank you so much!

ReadingRover I‘m so happy you liked everything! I always have such a hard time narrowing down what books to send. Did the little glass cat make it in one piece? Lol I almost forgot to put it in there! 7y

Jess @ReadingRover yes, the little guy is with my little cat collection right now! The book selection was spot on and I don't have any of them either. Love it. Thanks so much! 7y
ReadingRover @Jess I‘m so glad! That Varney Book might take you until next Halloween to read! 😂 7y
Jess @ReadingRover I'm sure that will take some time but I'm totally in for over a 1,000 pages of vampires! 7y

Ok, so the cover isn't exactly a #BodiceRipper but the first chapter ends thus: "He drags her head to the bed's edge. He forces it back by the long hair still
entwined in his grasp. With a plunge he seizes her neck in his fang-like teeth—a gush of blood, and a hideous sucking noise follows. The girl has swooned, and the vampyre is at his hideous repast!"
That has to count, right? And the buildup is the most gothic thing ever. #booklove17

I was so creeped out by the cover as a kid/young teen, that I would avoid looking at it when opening the book. 😅 #booktober #creepycovers #deutsch

The heroine/victim in this penny dreadful is (I'm pretty sure) currently reading a penny dreadful. #VictorianMeta

(it succeeds in distracting her from her woes :) )

So, I'm reading this #pennydreadful and the dialogue sucks (reads annoyingly like a play) but the narrative/writing itself is really good! Within the first few pages I was in love with the (overdone) descriptions of mundane things.

J.Isgriggs Barnes and Noble just came out with this beautiful collection of Penny Dreadfuls. I very much enjoyed it. 8y
Cyn.Microcosm Ooh! That sounds awesome! 8y
