Brother Cadfael sets out on a dangerous quest to find a trio of missing travelers The winter of 1139 will disrupt Brother Cadfaels tranquil life in Shrewsbury with the most disturbing of events. Raging civil war has sent refugees fleeing north from Worcester. Among them are two orphans from a noble family, a boy of thirteen and an eighteen-year-old girl of great beauty, and their companion, a young Benedictine nun. The trio never reaches Shrewsbury, having disappeared somewhere in the wild countryside. Cadfael is afraid for these three lost lambs, but another call for help sends him to the church of Saint Mary. A wounded monk, found naked and bleeding by the roadside, will surely die without Cadfaels healing arts. Why this holy man has been attacked and what his fevered ravings reveal soon give Brother Cadfael a clue to the fate of the missing travelers. Now Cadfael sets out on a dangerous quest to find them. The road will lead him to a chill and terrible murder and a tale of passion gone awry. And at journeys end awaits a vision of what is best, and worst, in humankind.

#two4tuesday @TheSpineView

1. Quite inadvertently, Crucible by James Rollins, it‘s about witches
2. The tagged book. Only my second 5-star read for 2019

Bookzombie Rollins is on my list because of you. Where should I start? Does he only have a series? 5y
Texreader @Bookzombie Yay!!!!! Yay!!!!! I hope to create a Rollins fan!! He has the Sigma Force series and the Order of the Sanguines series among others. Sigma Force is my fave but the Order is awesome, too. The Tucker Wayne series is an offshoot of Sigma Force and very endearing. I didn‘t start them in order but given the opportunity I‘d do so. The first one is Sandstorm. Some are better than others. But they are addictive! 5y
Bookzombie I don‘t know when I will get to it but I added Sandstorm to my TBR. I‘m pretty sure I will love it. 🙂 5y
TheSpineView I have not read Rollins. Another to add to my growing list! Thanks for playing! 5y

Mid-book review. These Brother Cadfael books had started to feel formulaic: a murder, several suspects with motives, & Cadfael to solve the crime. Until now with book 6: the unrest caused by England‘s Civil War has resulted in wandering lawlessness and refugees. Cadfael has very nasty problems, including murder, to solve now. It‘s a more depressing read, but more realistic for the times. Excellently done.

Andrew65 @Sarah83 I‘m hoping to get through a few of the series this year. Got 3 planned for this month alone. 6y
rwmg So sad she didn't have time to finish the series. She wrote the last one but didn't have time to cover the whole war. All you series authors out there, write faster - you never know. 6y
Andrew65 @rwmg Yes very sad. Similar things happened to Sue Grafton in the alphabet series - only got to Y. 6y

This is in my top three of the Cadfael mysteries. I love the almost closed environment storyline. It tackles important issues of loyalty, violence, women's status. It's the introduction of my favourite character that isn't Cadfael. This one has action, love, peril all in a really good entertaining story.

November hasn't been a really good for reading. Still, I'm hoping to finish these by the week-end. Ellis Peters' is a reread and The boyfriend makeover is one book I've been waiting to be available for awhile. #currentlyreading

LeahBergen I'm a Cadfael fan, too. 😀 8y

Seshat Is that a hardcover? 8y
writerlibrarian No. It's a newish kinda wood lithograph paperback edition. I've found them quite beautiful. My new copies are all in this edition. 8y
